» Makes Me Not Want To Fly Any Time Soon...  ...  Last Reply: 4 months ago by Lasha.

There have been some really strong wind guts lately here in Europe. Now that the storm is over, instead of spring time we are going to get snow and ice.

But that plane incident..scary, no wonder I hate flying. I'm always worried sick when traveling trans atlantic, 9 hour form Amsterdam to Aruba.

» Photo Essay: The Assasination of Benazir Bhutto  ...  Last Reply: 8 months ago by shadowsun7.

I haven't been following the situation in Pakistan in details but I was aware of the main story. So yesterday I was shocked when I saw she was murdered. I have no idea why but I feel real sad of what happened to Benazir Bhutto, if she was to be elected it would have been a good start for Pakistan for a better situation.

And I find it ultimately insulting of the current government to claim that she wasn't murdered but hit her head on the sunroof while it's obviously she was murdered.

And as for the photos they are excellent, although a sad situation John Moore was there at the right time and place to show the world.

» At what age do you teach your kids to use guns?  ...  Last Reply: 8 months ago by MarkWiseman.

My point is that if all of us decide to accept everything as a fact we may as well stop trying to cure illness, help the poor, care of the sick ones, stop hunger, design safer cars, and the list goes on. Why waste time, it's all a fact...right?

I believe we should always try for a better world, nothing wrong with that.

» At what age do you teach your kids to use guns?  ...  Last Reply: 8 months ago by MarkWiseman.

I have read a few notes here about gun possession and it's not the first time I hear the argument

Remove guns from the people and you have no way to protect yourself from an unchecked government.

What I find ironic is, that the same supporters of the current government who by the way never cared for gun laws are the same people who use the "unchecked government" argument. Shows what kind of faith they have in their own government.

Unless you live in a third world country I wouldn't loose sleep on wether the government will become a dictatorship overnight.

For me it's just very simple, gun violence is an everyday fact, no amount of arguments can justify all gun violence dead.

Decipher

Clique — Posted: Nov. 11, 2007  ...   Last By: Gnorb @ 38 years ago

I read this book more then a year ago, it was paperback so I lost it and then couldn't remember the title and author. Today I opened a Moleskine I hadn't looked at in ages and there I had it written, "Decipher" by Stel Pavlou

I kept thinking about this book and how I want to read more of this kind of stories. Mystery like, based on existing legends and mysteries, in case of "Decipher" the lost city of Atlantis. I found this book really good, full of mysteries and thrillers. This is one of those lesser known books that are pretty good.

Anyone know more books in the same category? Others more obvious one that I already read are "The Da Vinci Code" and "The Rule of Four". It's hard to browse for these specific books, so any suggestions are welcome.

I read The Historian 2 years ago and although being a long book I read it in a couple of days. I found it very good, although very fictional it contained some facts and history I never knew before. Not wanting to spoil the story I'll will not say much. But if you like fiction and history you'll like this book.

Another way of doing it if the other doesn't work.

Kitchen Nightmares the UK version and Hells Kitchen the US version. They also show Jamie Oliver here but I never liked him, no idea why(Although I like how he promotes healthy food in the schools). While For Ramsay in Kitchen Nightmares I like to see how he helps reorganize a restaurant. And Hells Kitchen is just very entertaining to watch, they just started showing the third season here in the Netherlands.

» Should Perfumes be Banned?  ...  Last Reply: 11 months ago by maccasenior.

The thing with perfumes is, that lots of people use cheap ones and they put on too much. I love perfumes, I'm very picky with which ones I like and I always put it on moderate. But I rather have someone smelling of cheap perfume sitting beside me in the tram then somebody who doesn't shower or use deodorant.

But you have to know perfume, the different kinds, how much to put on and if it really smells good on you. Perfumes smell different on each person, never exact the same. A perfume that smells good on someone might not smell good at all on the other.

» What do *you* think of the Harry Potter books?  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by Vidar.

Well I do not like fantasy books at all. I remember a few years back I picked up the first Harry Potter book; I had no idea about the books, they where just displayed there and I was bored so I bought one. Well after the first chapter I was hooked. I guess it was the fact that it's about a normal boy at first in a miserable position who finds out he's a wizard, got me.

Since then I read the rest and was first as soon as a new book came out. I guess liking the books is about taste. That a book is popular doesn't mean everyone will like them. I saw LOTR movies but I'm totally not interested in reading the books.

Also I do believe that when reading Harry Potter or any kind of fantasy book you have to be really open minded and let your fantasy flow with the story. But again it's all about personal taste.

It might be just me but I rather pay taxes to get decent health insurance then be uninsured. I mean seriously do people really value extra cash over having good health insurance and no need to worry about hospital bills if you get sick.

So be it if I have to have a regular car instead of a SUV a regular house instead of one with spare rooms and big garage, etc. I mean no matter how healthy you are now, everyone is at risk to wake up sick one day. You wouldn't want to worry about bills when you are sick.

Back in 2000 I just came to Netherlands to study. I was in a hurry to get a PC and internet setup in my tiny room. And my knowledge back then was minimal. So I bought a HP pavilion. It did work well but later I realized I paid to much for a computer with low specs. Through my co-students at college I learned and 2 years later I went to the yearly computer market, bought everything and build one myself. It still works without problems!

But I switched to Apple three years ago, never had a problem except for the iBook HD starting to fail after one year. So I learned very fast, never buy brand named computers. Build one yourself and if you can't most computer shop sell their own builds.

» Health Insurance  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by Alday.

Alday, not everyone doesn't have a job just because they are lazy. Single parents without higher education have a harder time managing a job and taking care of their kids. Just because you worked yourself up doesn't mean everyone can. And if everyone could get a better job then cleaning or garbage picker, who would do those job? Every job counts to keep daily life going.

Well here in the Netherlands everyone has to pay taxes, a lot of tax is being paid here. But the citizen do see where their money goes, health care, one of the best public transportation in the world(albeit expensive). Student loans, every student with Dutch nationality has right on a student loan to do college and/or university. You pay back at very low interest once you get a job. The debt is tax deductible and if you don't have a job right away you don't have to pay until you do have a job.

Another thing, there is also the no-claim deal. If you didn't go to the doctor the whole year you get money back from what you paid on insurance that year. This is to keep people from going to the doctor with all kinds of thing that don't need medical attention.

» Health Insurance  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by Alday.

Thanks for the explanation joshawesome and nowickedwitch. It's pretty scary to live in a first world country and not having insurance. If I lived in the US I would have huge medical bills. Even now that all is covered for me I still get shocked when the insurance sends me my monthly cost breakdown of what they have covered.

I'm not saying its perfect here, they do a lot to keep the cost down, like generically medicine instead of the original one. But if correct that mostly has to do with patents. Also you always need to be referred to a specialist by your general practitioner because of insurance.
And each year insurance cost rises. But in the end you have your rights to get good medical help.

In a perfect world everyone should have right to (affordable)insurance and health care on equal level. Just like we have human rights.

» Health Insurance  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by Alday.

So basically most people are able to get insurance through their jobs at low cost. And otherwise just pay for one. I read somewhere that the price depends on where you live? Different states, different prices?

Health Insurance

Health Community — Posted: May. 19, 2007  ...   Last By: Alday @ 1 year ago

I've been wondering for sometime already, what is exactly the deal of health insurance for people living in the US? Here in the Netherlands we have an universal health insurance, meaning there is law that says that you must insure yourself. You may choose the company, the package(basic, extra, with dental, etc.) And once a year you have the opportunity to switch company if you are not satisfied.

Even so not everyone is insured but if they do get sick they got a right on equal health treatment. This is paid out of a fund kept by all insurance companies, for cases like this. And last the cost of health insurance varies from 100 euro a month for a basic coverage to 500 euro or more. But if you have basic, it covers most common things.

And most important, everyone has the right on the same price, even if you are already sick or have something like diabetes. You pay the same as a healthy person.

So if you live in the US, do you have health insurance? If not, why? Tell me more about it.

Well when two people create a magazine, its their personal creative input that makes the magazine what it is. If you stop writing your own weblog and someone else takes over, will it still be the same?

I just read about it all. Very sad, for me JPG Magazine was always Heather and Derek. The fact that they are not involved anymore just made me lose interest in the magazine. I know its one side of the story but I'm glad I never met that guy Paul Cloutier. A fine example of a backstabbing friend.

I'm a kidney patient, currently on the transplant waiting list. When you experience what it is to need a transplant to live, believe me having an animal organ won't seem disgusting anymore.

The biggest problem is that there are insufficient donors which creates a market for alternatives. Here in the Netherlands donorship is a hot topic of discussion. Many people just don't want to be available as donor in case something must happen to them. Most of them don't really have a reason as why they won't be donor others out of religion believe, which you have respect. But then it gets tricky, a lot won't donate because of religion but if they are the one who need an organ they will take one. Personally I find that hypocritical.

But if I follow the discussion about it amongst regular citizen, people can be very harsh. I guess if you are not in the situation of needing an organ you won't fully realize what it is. I'm only 25 and I'm on dialysis, I'm all for alternatives organs.

And even before I was sick I was never one to deny cure to any one because disease can happen to anyone, today you might be healthy but that can change in the blink of an eye.
