It will be a strong competitor if you get rid of that stupidity called WYSIWYG. It just makes everything unnecessarly bloated. We have so many browser-freak rendering engines that one window can't hold all differences.

What about Linux, PHP, MySQL, Ruby on Rails, and other stuff?

The problem, IMHO, is that great designers might not feel so comfortable with sharing a great theme (omg, people are going to steal my stuff and don´t give me the credits), so the quality tends to drop.

If recognition isn´t enough anymore, why don´t WP-Themes offer something for them?

I didn't like just 3 ads on the top. Perhaps 4 ads would make a better grid, or alignment. Anyway, it's a lot better than previous 9r versions! Congrats!

@jwynia
that's another point very important: cross-plataform compatibility.

today I tried Aptana... but it's too much like eclipse, and consumes a lot of memory too.

Which code editor do you use?

Programming Community — Posted: Jan. 26, 2007  ...   Last By: corenominal @ 7 months ago

Hello!

I´m looking for more choices of code text editors than the popular dreamweaver, eclipse, notepad++, textedit....etc.

I´d like to know which code editors are you using right now (and the plataform: windows, mac, linux), the license (freeware, open source, proprietary,...etc)

Features wanted:

- code collapsing
- code highlight
- markup validation
- css panel TOC
- code automatic indentation

supporting languages such as: html, css, js, php, ruby

Would be great to know why did you choose the editor.

Thanks a lot!

» "Title - Sitename" or "Sitename -Title"  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by seopher.

I believe the title shouldn't be a complete breadcrumb: company > section 1 > section 1.c > news > news itself. The core thing on the page should be the title: news itself > section 1 of company, and so on.

» Should every blog have a search form?  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by Oli.

@Oli

for me the real problem for a blog isn´t the space spent. Is the content relevance. Blog designs are commonly heavily cluttered, and that´s annoying, that´s bandwidth wasteful.

"Hmm... let's see what Ben wrote in February... Oh crap, 60 posts!?"
... damn it. I´m thinking of getting rid of month-by-month lists too.

Thank you all folks for participating until now. It´s been very interesting to see different points of view.

@ frozted
"After the title, a search form is the next most important thing on a blog."

What about alternative digging methods? I think the search form is fairly overused. Specially for new visitors, who don´t know exactly what to type in there. What do you think?

@Alday
"I have a search but I think I'm the only one that uses it,"

That´s exactly the point I´m trying to improve.

@Tyme,
for sure, this research on UI is going to be a blog post asap ;-)

I´m currently evaluating the need of a search form on my actual blog. I´m not planing to have search on every page, but only within the upper tabs.

Tag clouds that just suck

Design Community — Posted: Jan. 10, 2007  ...   Last By: Devin @ 1 year ago

Reading a list of tags (tag cloud) is annoying, and generally pointless.

It´s very common to find long lists of obscure 8-12px font-sized tags like:

...design blog software music tools reference webdesign video web programming apple web2.0 css howto linux news art free tutorial windows mac education photography blogs imported flash iphone tips shopping travel business javascript mobile java photos technology ajax health search games sex google opensource movies science inspiration politics research videos porn...

Do you think users have patience to read that? Isn´t better to promote the search form or another interface?

Should every blog have a search form?

Design Community — Posted: Jan. 10, 2007  ...   Last By: Oli @ 1 year ago

On previous blogs, I've placed a big, easy to find input on the header of every page. When I was getting around 50-150 visits a day (so, not a completely unknown blog), I was astonished to see that only less than 1% of visitors were using the search.

I decided to get rid of it.

How many users actually type something into search forms? Relevant keywords or just fragments? Does the search feature is always relevant?

I don't think every page of a blog must have that search. In particular cases, even the blog could haven't search forms.

Do you agree? Can you add sth interesting here?
Thanks!

» Isn't the Windows Vista impressive?  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by JustinKistner.

I've tried Vista RC1 for 2 months and I wasn't that "woooow look at this" when I use OS X. It just worked fine, did basic tasks and didn't crashed (blue or red screens of death). It still requires a LOT of ram and a powerfull video card.

I agree that Vista will be for sure, the next OS, but only at desktop. The competition is far ahead with integrated media, mobile life, digital cameras, online services, ajax, and all that stuff related to web we will consume a lot.

Do you disagree?

Take Zune for instance. It isn't compatible with Vista. Can you believe?

@CK,

than comes another problem: taxonomy and folksonomy for a wide range of news/products/whatever.

I've faced this problem while doing some IA research: should the category (or tag) "iPhone" fits: eletronics, mobile phones, computer & office, or gifts?

The problems: how to define the 'default' category? Simple persona research? Does the category names are being understood by users?

Avoiding vertical scrolling is nonsense.

Design Community — Posted: Jan. 9, 2007  ...   Last By: colorcharge @ 1 year ago

I grow tired of seeing people say:

- Limit the most important part of layout within a box limited by height: 480px for 800x600, ~600px for 1024x768 and so on.

I think that´s a bad way to design because users will scroll down the content, furiously searching for links, and other relevant content. Not actually standing for 5 minutes on the top and trying to understand it.

Users don´t read. They´ll scan the content.

Furthermore, how can you set the ideal height area, for flexible layouts? If the column is stretched, than the content goes up.

What do you think?

» What resolution do you design around?  ...  Last Reply: 6 months ago by Mike.

I think 990x600 fits 1024x768 and above very well.

YOUTUBE is blocked in Brazil

Web Community — Posted: Jan. 8, 2007  ...   Last By: JustinKistner @ 1 year ago

One web 2.0 problem: control.

We know that Web 2.0 hype is about user collaboration. This highly-opened culture can represent a danger for the company when someone publishes some controversial content like: confidential information, racist texts, or nude pictures/movies of a famous celebrity. The blocking of Youtube just reflects this unfortunate condition.

The WWW has given us an incredible power to spread information at light velocities. Vinton Cerf, one of the creators of the Web, says that “…the information on the web may be eternal. Once in the web, it may never be completely deleted“. This phenomena happens because the number of servers around the world, redundant data, and the ease of copying and distributing media.

Blocking one single website, but leaving the video anywhere the web is like… nonsense? Do you realize that? Tapping one hole and digging another?

My favourite picks:

If you guys have already discussed about this, I´m sorry - kind of doing some research around here. Thanks.

» How do you evaluate the quality of a web site?  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by michaellouviere.

I evaluate it by the amount/quality of:

- easy to use navigation;
- context over consistency;
- 20 words or less clear instructions;
- relevant content (for the audience intended);
- appealing graphics (or sound).

It does not matter having a site map, or a search box, or a one-size fits-all menu... is the context what matters most.
