» So you don’t ask...  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by Scrivs.

I would first just like to say that I've thought long and hard about the following email. It's not my intention to judge anyone, simply state the facts as they seem apparent to me:

In my mind, deleting the entire note and all of its replies is spitting in the face of everyone who took time to respond to the note itself and everyone else within it. There was nothing outrageous about the note itself. It sounds more like you, Tyme, were simply offended.

The way that you responded to Oli above indicates that you're speaking through emotions rather than the rational, non-biased and collected leader of a popular online forum.

This is blatant censorship and it saddens me. When I first began participating in notes this seemed like a wonderful place to discuss all types of issues, where people of varying backgrounds could give their opinions and we were all free to take them or leave them.

Recently you've mention that you've deleted many posts because there were "too many about the iPod", so a guy like Dale comes along with a little humor to inject into the conversations and he's shut down, then you delete a member for posting a video. So this is not just based on one decision, but many recent decisions.

This is the last note I'll ever post to on 9Rules, please feel free to ban or delete me or whatever decision befits a Ruler.

» Making a living as a Blog Designer?  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by clicknathan.

You've got a very affordable price, so you can probably suck in quite a bit of work. I wouldn't be able to make a living if every site I built was for $500, personally. For the prices I charge, your average blogger isn't looking to pay that much, unless they're big time and looking to make a living off of their blog themselves, or it's a corporate blog of some type.

Another thing I contemplate is how long this blogging bubble will last? Already from two years ago I've noticed a lot less people in my "real life" who blog or talk about it, whereas 24 months ago every one had a blog or three.

But if you know how to build a blog, you can probably build a website, and I don't see web design going away any time soon. (At least until Walmart figures out a way to sell it.)

No use of AJAX

I'm not sure this is true. I thought Gmail was built on AJAX and it works for me (though not particularly exceptionally) and if I go into my WordPress admin system, the AJAXy menus to the side of the Write/Edit post area work (though you can't drag them around, they still expand, contract, work.)

Doesn't stress shorter input types (zip code vs city)

Wouldn't this be more on the site's designer's end?

Not using hi-res images scaled down. (see pocketweet sideways)

With the Zooming in capabilities, isn't it nice to have the full sizers? Though having the option to set this would be nice. Options in general would be nice. :)

Lots of upgrades could happen, a couple I can think of:

  • It'd be nice if multiple pages could load at one time, or if I could begin to load up a page, drop back out and play around in Notes or Calendar or whatever, and then come back to fully loaded pages.
  • Some way to "open in new tab" - this has become such a necessary feature in normal life that it gets frustrating on the phone.

What ever happened to Lindows? That sounded like the most viable option for Linux to ever take off, because it actually provided a completed package "right out of the box."

I learned Basic on my own in high school, CSS and XHTML later in life, and now am making my way through PHP, all which can be a bit daunting, but doable.

Sitting down and trying to figure out Linux, installing kernels, patches, boxing my root... it's all just so overwhelming, anyone who doesn't replace all of his E's with 3's is going to have such a hard time.

» Responding to Notes  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by LorriM.

Sometimes, when there are like 46,789.456 replies already it can be a bit daunting to read them all.

Sometimes it feels compelling to post a reply, even if it's very similar to what someone else has written.

I think that changing the subject is a-okay, but it might be nice if we had the ability to reply to a certain note. So if estaria and mwilsonemt here wanted to go off on a tangent, they could, and it would be apparent that they were replying directly to each other.

I think most forums systems give you that ability. I guess Notes is really only a forum in the sense that it was based off of forum software, but in the end seems to be much more of a mass blog with comments rather than forum replies.

I really liked Dale, more than I've liked anyone on this site thus far.

I assumed he was legit. I know plenty of people like him in the little hick town I grew up in. People who say/write what they want to and don't care about sounding stupid, and while I agree that they do sound stupid as far as language and grammar are concerned, at least they get into what they want to get into.

Good job Dale, boo for the murder of his online persona.

How do you contribute to WordPress?

Blogging Community — Posted: Sep. 7, 2007  ...   Last By: themikehaynes @ 1 year ago

For those of you who use WP, whether you have a personal blog on wordpress.com or you make a living at building custom installs for people, what do you do to contribute back to the community?

Help out in the forums? Edit the codex? Build free themes?

Just curious as WP has given me so much and I'm always looking for new ways to give back.

» Serif or Sans-serif for the web?  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by dustinbrewer.

I agree with the sans for anything and serif only for large text like headlines. Wired.com is a great example of a site that uses serif for the body font, makes it too small, and it gets difficult to read.

In general, I think fonts on the Web are too small. Anything smaller than the text here on 9Rules is really difficult for a lot of people to read, and not just the old and blind. I wear contacts sometimes and, as a lot of people do I'm sure, sometimes I leave them in too long or am sitting in a smoky / overly air conditioned room. At that point really small text or text without sufficient contrast can get difficult to read.

That's what I think the Web 2.0 thing is really all about, taking design and functionality and making them all they can be on the web. Hence the large amounts of whitespace and giant font sizes.

» What's your opinion about music piracy?  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by Josue.

I was a huge fan of music piracy when I had no money and liked music anyway. Plus, in the beginning it was just too tempting, so easy, and when Napster first broke onto the scene we really only had mainstream music as an outlet for experiencing new music on a large scale level (to find indie bands back then, you had to actually live near a local record store or know someone cool).

But now that we can buy single tracks from iTunes, with subscription services and places like eMusic, plus the fact that I have some money to spare these days, I feel like $1 is pretty damned cheap for something I may listen to 1000s of times for the rest of my life.

When it comes to stealing music, what do you think about situations like The Beatles? It's my understanding that none of the surviving Beatles own their songs, which I might almost assume means they're not making royalties on them (I could be wrong about that, easily.) But if a musician isn't actually getting any $$ from the sale of a song, or maybe the entire band is dead or something, would you feel less bad about stealing the song?

"No discussing notes outside of the notespace."

Certainly not that I'm saying you shouldn't be doing it here, I just think it'd be hilarious if you're both peaking over the other's shoulders "Did he reply yet?" "She'll never suspect this one!" "Ooh, that's it, he's getting artificial creamer in his soy latte!"

Buying new RAM for a MacBook Pro

Does anyone have any experience adding / buying new RAM for a MacBook Pro?

I bought mine in March and have been thinking of jacking it up to 3Gigs and hear that you don't really need to buy Apple RAM, but that anything will work. I'm wondering how true this is (ie, does "work" mean work as well, or just "yeah, it won't necessarily make your laptop explode.)

» In a World of Free Stuff on the Web, then there's Apple  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by clicknathan.

Apple has to pay the labels and artists even for ringtone sells so there really isn't an option to give them away for free or else every song in the iTunes store would have that capability.

I can't be sure on whether Apple would need to pay royalties to labels and artists for ringtones, but you can't buy a ringtone for $.99 - you first have to buy the song or use one you already own (can you even use a song that you got from outside of the Apple store?)

So you're paying for the royalties of a song twice.

As for being an early adopter and the price drop, well that's not really the issue at hand. I assume that's the reason for multiple iPhone/iPod posts on this site: different topics for each. What is the point of allowing multiple notes if people aren't allowed to bring up different points about the same subject?

For example, this note is about Ringtones. It's not about whether or not you want an iPod Touch or an Nano. It's not about organizational features of the iPhone or even that the iPhone has dropped in price. If there should only be one thread about iPods/iPhones where every single aspect of those subjects must be discussed, then perhaps that should be made clear. I realize that this post in itself gets off subject, but I'm slightly weirded out about making it into its own note for what the comment repercussion might spawn.

I don't really see the issue with having lots of notes about the same subject, anyway. A lot of people on this site like Apple products. Apparently a lot of people like to talk about movies and photography and dead fat singers and WordPress, many of which are topics I don't care about, but having a plethora of things to discuss has always been a primary reason for visiting this site.

Sorry if that's all a bit forward, it just seems that there are a lot of pseudo-restrictions popping up here, unwritten rules type stuff that either needs to be made clear or else should be let slide.

Coffee, good or just plain good for you?

But of course, coffee is also generally seen as a vice, an indulgence, perhaps even a bad habit.

What's the general feeling on coffee out there? Good for you, good tasting, bad for you, makes your feet stink...?

Ethics, flaming, and RightOn's political status aside...

What's your beef? I've been a Cingular customer for years and I can tell you, $0.99 for a ringtone is WELCOME... I recall paying $1.99 for a ringtone from Cingular.

No offense, seriously RightOn, but I can't see how paying $1.99 for a ringtone is anywhere reasonable when an entire song is $.99. Not to mention that you're not paying $.99 for the ringtone, you're paying $1.98 because you have to first buy the song, then pay to have it turned into a ringtone. Ask yourself this:

  • Is a ringtone worth more than an entire song? Is it worth as much? It is definitely less of a product.
  • When a device can already play music, why is that device purposely made to not allow that music to be played in different ways?
  • Why would a device be restricted from purchasing downloads through AT&T's other ringtone outlets, there are many of them, some are free, others are through AT&T themselves and cost $$. None are available to iPhone users.

It is a proven fact that you CAN take music you already own and make it into a ringtone FREE OF CHARGE and install it on your iPhone.

But this also likely violates your terms of service, eh? And while it may be possible, I'm a little wary of hacking a $600 just so I can hear Snoop Dogg playing while my mom calls to check if I've been getting enough protein.

When it does come to ethics, I think that corporations are free to pick and choose what "Beliefs" they have or not. And lets face it, any corporation that is making big cash and has investors probably has a primary belief, which is to make money, and that's an ethical responsibility to the investor. Ethics, however, has nothing to do with this conversation, in my opinion, but simply that it just doesn't make sense to limit this device in so many ways.

It's billed as a small computer, they're saying it's running OS X, but show me a computer that you can't install software on, show me an OS at all that doesn't allow you to manage your own files and manipulate as you'd like.

I'm running 2.0.0.6, about 6 plugins, nothing too heavy (other than the Web Developer toolbar, I suppose).

Anything over 10 tabs just dies. I have a pretty brand new Mac that's high end enough that it should be able to handle 10 tabs. My old Windows machine + FF 1.5 could easily run 20 tabs...

» Keeping our children safe, or making them vulnerable?  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by LorriM.

I agree with everyone who thinks that raising your child is an effort in communication, trust and a little risk, not becoming a slave driving dictator who mandates every move they make and doesn't give them the freedom to figure out the difference between right and wrong.

If we are always watching our children, always making sure they're not getting into trouble, then they will never have the experience of determining right and wrong for themselves, and we'll have more Hitlers, W. Bushs, etc.

Everyone deserves some sort of privacy, even children, and everyone should be treated with the respect and trust that we want them to treat us with.

It amazes me how horrible so many parents are - I mean, you've got 18 or so years of experience being a child, being the child of a parent, and somehow when you grow up you completely forget the whole thing. Because it's easier to say "because I said so" than it is to say "this is why you don't do that".

Sneaky shortcuts in Firefox?

Software Community — Posted: Sep. 6, 2007  ...   Last By: silvertje @ 1 year ago

So I recently discovered that if I type something into the address bar in Firefox 2.0.0.6, such as "google" and then hit Shift + Enter, it'll automatically put a ".net" after it.

Cmd + Enter will put ".com" after it. Cmd + Shift + Enter works for ".org".

Nifty. Does anyone else know any not-so-known shortcuts?

or

an 8GB Touch for $300. For an extra $100 you get bigger video, better design, the Internet, and you can pretend like you have an iPhone so the ladies will do the loving to you.

In a World of Free Stuff on the Web, then there's Apple

Apple Community — Posted: Sep. 6, 2007  ...   Last By: clicknathan @ 1 year ago

Google provides oodles of video, storage, software and email online for free. Skype, MySpace, FaceBook and almost every forum out there give us a free means of communicating and building only communities. The Internet is by and large a place where things are free.

So what is the deal with Apple?

Ringtones for $0.99?! That is not a good, fair price. Not at all. What overhead does Apple have to justify this cost? Using Garageband or probably even Sound Recorder, I can cut a song into 30 seconds worth of play and add some fade in/out. There are even sites on the Web that allow you to do this. So how can Apple justify charging us an extra buck to turn the songs (we've already paid a $0.99 for mind you) into ringtones?

They say that it's "still less than the cost of most ringtones alone." If Apple wants to compare their business model to that of AT&T, Verizon and co., they have every right to. Those two companies have systematically screwed the population ever since Ma Bell was dictator over all telephone communications. They're the reason I use my mobile minutes to call my girlfriend and she uses her mobile minutes to receive my call - they're charging us twice for the same call - all the while people in Japan and Europe can perform brain surgery over there 4 year old Nokia.

Charging us for ringtones is akin to soda machines that say "Exact Change Only". You know there's change in there, and you know that soda machines have the ability to determine how much you put in and what change you should get back, but someone is greedy and wants to take every opportunity they can to snag an extra few pennies off of the consumer.

Shame on Apple for charging us extra for what should have been an inherent feature from the beginning. Shame on them for "selling" us these phones and then not letting us customize them how we want to. And shame on them for hiding behind the guise of what AT&T or Big Music will "allow" them to do, simply so we can continue to pretend like they're a "really cool company."
