I like nunshavemorefun.com but can't think of what to do with it...

» Do You Own Your Name Domain Name?  ...  Last Reply: 7 months ago by Christian.

I don't and to be honest I've never really thought about it before. I just checked (christianwatson.com) and there's nothing there right now so maybe it's even available!

» How many domains do you own?  ...  Last Reply: 7 months ago by wkasel.

I own about 5 or so. I'd like to develop a couple but just don't have the time. For example, I own bebonews.com which I think could be pretty successful if 1) I had the time, and 2) I was interested in Bebo. Oh well...

It's refreshingly simple and it's fun to keep tabs on what your friends are doing. That's it for me.

Fans of Requiem for a Dream should also check out The Fountain (http://www.deezer.com/#music/album/31616) -- it's excellent.

Here are some others, all of which you can listen to on Deezer:

* Brokeback Mountain - http://www.deezer.com/#music/album/2170
* Lady in the Water - http://www.deezer.com/#music/album/10580

» Limitations of Adobe Fireworks?  ...  Last Reply: 8 months ago by RightOn.

Fireworks is a great all-in-one tool. You can also use all of the Photoshop plugins in it (or at least the vast majority of them). It's way easier to learn and use than Photoshop.

Only downside is that your Photoshop skills fall by the wayside which can be a problem for employers.

Why do you think GE.com -- for example -- has a good design? Because it enables visitors to accomplish their goals easily? Or because it looks pretty?

In order to provide some examples, it might be helpful to know more about what you mean when you say 'great design.'

I look at the GE home page and see a large empty space that could be made more useful to visitors. I'm sure it would look nice as a screenshot, but as a home page it feels like a wasted opportunity.

I'd imagine you could just go through a list of the top Fortune 100 companies and see plenty of similar examples -- if that's what you're looking for?

I recently came across this site, which seems pretty cool. If you're a member of other design communities such as Design Float, this would be a good one to join too.

» Do You?  ...  Last Reply: 10 months ago by Christian.

I did this with a site for a wedding DJ.

He didn't like the color scheme -- yellow/orange and salmon pink -- but relented when his girlfriend told him that she liked the color scheme (usually it's the bride-to-be that hires the DJ).

I wasn't that keen on it either, but when my wife came in to my office and the first thing she said was that she liked the colors, I knew I was on to a winner!

Thankfully, I had a client who could see reason...

» Need a logo for your new company? Use speech bubbles!  ...  Last Reply: 10 months ago by Christian.

That is great -- damn, they are so bad! I wonder how many will be around in a year's time ... with the same logo? What do speech bubbles have to do with half of these companies anyway?!

» Reuse of elements?  ...  Last Reply: 10 months ago by Christian.

Nothing wrong with reusing elements, although it's never a bad idea to tweak and improve. I always find myself building on things I've done before, rather than simply reusing them.

A few things stood out for me:

#1 - do something with your footer. It's a great place to add some design to your blog. You can list favorite posts, recommended reading, Flickr photos, etc. If you have a light site you can make it dark and add some contrast.

#2 - shorten your dates and make them stand out more. Perhaps display them as a calendar?

#3 Show the number of comments for each post. This is helpful for a reader scanning your home page to see which posts might be worth dipping into.

I'm sick of all the useless apps. I've stripped them out and just use FB as a way to stay in touch with people. For that it's great.

» Do you think web standards are boring?  ...  Last Reply: 11 months ago by guillaumeb.

Andy Rutledge has a great podcast on this subject.

To quote:

For other crafts and in other industries, standards are used to preserve and refer to quality. Why not in Web craft? This episode examines the gulf between Web standards and the idea of Web craft quality, and how some of design's cultural and information leaders perpetuate a misunderstanding of the medium.

Great post about one of the qualities of leadership.

» Top problems you have faced working in web design industry  ...  Last Reply: 12 months ago by bitsonewmedia.

Content is always a problem, in organizations large and small. It always takes longer to create than you think and the first draft is always worse than you think.

The other problem is working with people who aren't very talented. There are a lot of people working in the web design industry who really don't know what they are doing and do not take the time and trouble to educate themselves about best practices.

Concepts like accessibility and usability are alien to a lot of people. Many of them have never talked to a user or watched a usability test.

Is there a reason for the nautical theme? I like the visual design very much. Can't comment beyond that as I can't read the text, but I think it looks very nice overall.

I've been enjoying Pandora and Deezer a lot, especially the latter. It's a great way for creating custom playlists and for checking out new artists.

I've been enjoying listening to Pandora for a while now. I like to plug in an artist and see what other musicians it decides to play for me as well. Iron and Wine created a good station for me - pretty relaxing and folksy.

I would add a separate thumbnail of the band with a caption below it saying to click on it to view the detail. This seems the most obvious to a user and easiest to implement.

I've used Verve Hosting since 2001. No complaints. Site stays up except on the odd (joyous) occasion when Digg brings it down!
