TextMate for the win.

» Do you like Blog Networks?  ...  Last Reply: 8 months ago by Scrivs.

9Rules is really the only blog network I respect as a blogging network that isn't completely corporate (like Weblogs Inc is). I've seen so many stupid networks pop up recently, and they're so annoying.

I like blog networks that take their network seriously -- like 9rules. I hate it when someone just says "I'm starting a blog network", works on it for a day, then forgets about it.

Spam Karma 2 is one of my favorite plugins. I find it even more effective than Akismet.

The All-in-one SEO pack is a favorite, too.

I use Mint. :)

» How do you go about with several blogs?  ...  Last Reply: 8 months ago by mStudios.

You could use something like Yahoo! Pipes to combine the feeds, then put the Yahoo Pipes feed URL into sites like your my.9r profile.

I was just looking through new Mint referrers, and saw my profile page on Chawlk... I thought it was someone who was ripping off my.9r, until I read this... Haha.

» Weird Spikes In RSS Subscibers  ...  Last Reply: 9 months ago by themikehaynes.

When I looked at Feedburner stats yesterday, my stats went down from 125 to 85, another blog went down 100 -> 85, and another from 1200 -> 500. While, on the same day, Mashable's RSS readers were up +19000 that day, too.

Today, my stats are back up to 125, the other blog is back at 100, and the other is up to 1150. Mashable's stats are also down -15000 today. FeedBurner's been all over the place recently... :/

» Recommended Mac Apps?  ...  Last Reply: 7 months ago by dhjones.

Here's a few suggestions:

For coding: TextMate
For FTP: Transmit
Opening Apps, plus more: Quicksilver or Launchbar.
For RSS: NetNewsWire
For Blogging: MarsEdit

I did a post about this a while back (quite extensive -- not all are 'essential', but they're recommended) about this. Also got around 100 useful comments with even more suggestions. ... /selfplug.

Hope this helps!

» Podcasting files and WordPress...  ...  Last Reply: 8 months ago by cavemonkey50.

I think there is a way to insert the PodPress player, etc, with an external file. If you're writing a post in the WP-Admin, then go below and click "Add Media File", and where it says "Location", you link directly to the MP3. Remember that since this is an external file, you can't change the ID3 tags of that file from PodPress, you'll have to manage that locally (before you upload), or with your media host.

If you're looking for a free host, try TalkShoe -- they allow you to upload media files (but there are maintenances from time to time :/). That being said, I haven't used TalkShoe in a number of months, I've moved to Libsyn.

EDIT: I just found this: If you're only looking for a way to insert the flash audio player, and could care less about the other features, there's also the Audio Player plugin for WordPress. I'd still recommend PodPress, but if you really don't need all the features (like stats, podcast feed, etc), I'd go with the audio player plugin.

I bought my AppleCare on the last day of my limited warranty. I did feel really insecure for a little while though. But I'm on an iMac. Since you are getting a notebook, I'd say YES, get it.

» Should Wordpress Bloggers Pay For A Custom Theme Or Go With A Free One?  ...  Last Reply: 11 months ago by RalphDagza.

I would like to buy a custom theme to make my blog feel more unique, but for now I'm just editing up a free theme to fit the features (plugins) I want it to. I want to get a custom theme, I just don't have the money right now. :(

» What HTML Editor do you use?  ...  Last Reply: 8 months ago by Chris24.

I like TextMate for my regular editing, and SubEthaEdit if I need to collaborate on some code. Both only for Mac.

I'm on (mt) right now, so I can't really recommend any, sorry. However, be sure to check out this list of the worst hosts, just to make sure the one you decide on isn't near the top of the list ;-)

» Which statistics tool do you use?  ...  Last Reply: 8 months ago by Chris24.

Mint, definitely! However, I like knowing my stats as they happen. I also like having Mint installed because I can expand it with its peppers, unlike services that are not self-hosted.

» Rich or Famous?  ...  Last Reply: 11 months ago by roselcay.

I like ads like Glenn Wolsey has on his blog. Beautiful looking ads, which are interesting and relevant to the content, they don't slow his site down, and personally I end up clicking them and using the product because they are really relevant to what I like. AdSense ads seem really junky to me, not relevant, terrible looking, slow, and well, common (I hardly ever click AdSense ads.)

» Should Comments Be Edited or Deleted?  ...  Last Reply: 11 months ago by Chris24.

I only delete comments if they are spam, or contain a few swear words. I don't like my blog getting "cluttered" with spam, and I want to keep my blog family-safe.

I only edit comments if they have a bad url (then I change the url), but never change the grammar or spelling of the commenter. Also, if the comment messes up my theme then I will adjust it to not do that. I always say at the bottom of the comment I edited "Comment Edited by Chris Thomson: Corrected Link", or for whatever I had to change.

» Has Media Temple gone down the tubes?  ...  Last Reply: 12 months ago by bitsonewmedia.

I'm really surprised that (mt) is having this much downtime, and well, slowness. They power a lot of really great sites, and seem to be a great company (for example, this participate in this conversation, they respond to some comments on their blog, etc). I really hope they improve, or get back to what they used to be like (that is, when they had really nice hosting with hardly any downtime or latencies).

Who is your host? Are you happy with them?

Web Community — Posted: Dec. 1, 2007  ...   Last By: tazz @ 7 months ago

Hey,

I'm looking for a new host, because of (mt) being down, and sluggish these last few days, and I was looking to see if you guys have any suggestions! I don't need a dedicated server, since all I need to run is a Wordpress blog, but I'm looking for a good, reliable service, with pretty good uptime, good features, good value, preferably unlimited (or virtually unlimited subdomains, etc. I have already tried 1and1, and I wasn't very happy with them (MySQL latency issues, and their support was absolutely no help). Oh, and Linux-based hosting is preferred :)

Thanks in advance!

» Has Media Temple gone down the tubes?  ...  Last Reply: 12 months ago by bitsonewmedia.

I'm really considering switching to another host from (mt). I left my previous host, 1and1, because I had lots of mysql latency issues, and I sent support tickets to them, and ALL the answers were different. Now, with (mt), their darned Nov 30 maintenance is now Dec maintenance.

I moved to the (gs) from 1and1 because if a site got dugg (another, not mine), I don't want mine to go offline. The maintenance was originally scheduled for 9:30-300am PST, which is pretty long. Well, its not 11:15EST (many hours after 3am PST), and my site is STILL offline.

I've also had a really slow WP site. Arrrggghhhh.... I really like the (mt) handles support, and just all their services, but seriously, their MySQL really seems bad... and this is a LOT of downtime.

I don't want to pay $20 a month for hosting, when I could get a better hosting plan for less, with NO downtime. This is not acceptable.

» How do you capture screen shots?  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by Chris24.

Definetely Skitch, really good for things like if I take a screenshot of something, and it has a serial number or some private information, I can simple draw over it really quickly and easily. mySkitch is also really nice to upload images to the web FAST, but the other webpost features are great too.

» Glenn Scam  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by Chris24.

I really don't blame Glenn for the "PR Stunt", after all, he was just helping Indie Mac Devs. I mean, yeah, it might have gotten his site hits because of it, but he wasn't the one submitting it or anything. He, like the other sites were supporting the Indie Mac Devs. I do find it wrong to lie and say that the site was ACTUALLY hacked and it ISN'T a PR stunt, but I think comments getting a little out of hand on the "hacked" sites.

Oh, and I would have supported Mac Indie Devs too, but I wouldn't have lied in comments saying it "Is not a PR Stunt, and the site is actually hacked." ... I would have just ignored the commenter.
