Design Interprets. Design Speaks. Design Matters.

Design Community — Posted: Dec. 2, 2008

The concept of design as interpretation has deep implications for designers. Our work acts as a series of bridges between raw data, solutions, and people. When one of these bridges has a green wire crossed with a red wire, the whole system may fail to accomplish its task.

Bible Design: Illuminated Manuscripts to Postmodern Power Plays

Design Community — Posted: Nov. 18, 2008

By nature, design adds an interpretive grid to a body of information. Even the most unintrusive layout communicates subliminally about the designer's view of the contained text. How has it been approached in the past? What is modern design doing to the Bible today? And most importantly, how will this generation of designers shape Bible design in the future?

What to do When the World Wants to Cut Web Design from the Budget

Design Community — Posted: Nov. 11, 2008

It's no secret that marketing and technology budgets are the first to get thrown overboard when money gets tight. But are the results of a tightening belt destined to be only grim? Absolutely not. We will weather this storm and come out the other side all the better as long as we stay long-sighted and stick to a few basic principles.

11 Photoshop Tutorials All Web Designers Should Learn

Design Community — Posted: Nov. 5, 2008

At their core the vast majority of online Photoshop tutorials are teaching one of only a handful of techniques; the rest are essentially variations of the same. What this means is that a short list of well-chosen online Photoshop tutorials will pretty much bring you up to speed.

André Braz, The Experience Design Manifesto, and the State of Design

Design Community — Posted: Oct. 29, 2008

Recently, I've run across several references to André Braz's Experience Design Manifesto. His short manifesto is apparently being welcomed and applauded by the design community in general. I, on the other hand, found the document to be poorly planned, poorly executed, and riddled with clichés and pop-philosophy (No offense to André. I'm sure he put a lot of effort into it.) On the positive side, this is a perfect opportunity to turn deconstructivism against its master and discuss a rare modern attempt at defining purpose.

Interview: Stephen Olmstead of Sonata Creative

Design Community — Posted: Oct. 22, 2008

It's my pleasure to introduce my readers to Stephen Olmstead, owner of Sonata Creative in Phoenix Arizona. Stephen and his wife Celeste have recently launched Sonata Creative as an independent design studio—quite successfully, I might add. Stephen is also a blogger and a reformed Christian.

Saving a File Directly Into a MySQL Database

Design Community — Posted: Oct. 15, 2008

Let's say, for example, you have a client that needs to be able to upload sensitive company files that can only be accessed by certain employees. This is where the MySQL longblob field comes in handy. In this tutorial, I'll show how to get a file from a web form into a MySQL database and out again.

I Design Websites, Therefore, God Is

Design Community — Posted: Oct. 8, 2008

The majority of the most exceptional men and women in the historical landscape of philosophy have acknowledged the absolute necessity of a supreme being. Those who did not and were honest with the implications of their conclusions were forced into absurdism. But today, in a culture that is increasingly shallow and intellectually lazy, you'd be hard pressed to find an individual (educated or not) who knows anything of Thomas Aquinas' five rational proofs for the existence of God or has any concept of Aristotle's "unmoved mover".

Designers Beware: 10 Warning Signs of a Bad Client

Design Community — Posted: Sep. 24, 2008

Over the years I've learned a few warning signs that are dead giveaways for hard-to-please, controlling, whiny and/or needy clients. If you come across a potential client with one of these, think twice about the project. If they have two or three, run the other way.

The H Hierarchy: Using Heading Tags the Right Way

Design Community — Posted: Sep. 17, 2008

If you've been using CSS and web standards for awhile, then you probably already know that the HTML heading tags h1-h6 are meant to denote a hierarchy of importance—the most important, of course, being

and the least important being

. If you're new to CSS layouts and web standards then you might think heading tags just make text bigger or smaller. But there's a lot more to heading tags than most web designers realize. And in order to build beautifully semantic websites that degrade gracefully, a proper understanding of the tags is a must.

Show and Tell: A Christian Designer's Guide to Faith in the Workplace

Design Community — Posted: Sep. 3, 2008

How should a Christian manage his or her Christianity in the workplace? This is a question most Christian designers have considered at one time or another during the course of their career. In our current age (especially in America), the attitude of employers toward public displays of faith varies dramatically from one workplace to another. Some Christian designers work in a laid back work environment where outward displays of faith are seen as generally harmless (annoying at worst). Others work under management that is openly hostile toward Christianity. Still other Christian designers work for religious organizations where it's expected that every employee will let out a "praise God" from time to time.

Rollover Lite: A CSS Rollover Everyone Can Enjoy

Design Community — Posted: Aug. 27, 2008

I realize that there are about a million rollover tutorials out there. Some use JavaScript, some use CSS, but there are very few that are geared toward creating semantically correct rollovers that degrade gracefully. That's exactly what I'll be doing here.

Truth by Consensus: The Wiki Worldview and the Future of Knowledge

Design Community — Posted: Aug. 19, 2008

Should Christians give approval to a collection of knowledge that was essentially voted into truth by the masses? Does the Wiki model break the historical Christian principle that truth and reality are objective? These are some of the questions discussed at in this article.

Dynamically Resizing Text with CSS and Javascript

Design Community — Posted: Aug. 13, 2008

As the number of screen size and screen resolution possibilities increase, gracefully resizing text becomes more and more important to the usability of websites. This article explains how to set up a page for dynamic text resizing and implement a Javascript-powered dynamic text resizing program.

Design Sub-culture: Christians Would Rather Copy than Create

Design Community — Posted: Aug. 5, 2008

For the past 150 years or so, the Christian community has been declining in just about every creative arena. And in the last fifty years you would be hard pressed to find more than kitsch coming from the Christian creative community. What has caused this fall? Why has the once rich creative wellspring of Christianity seem to have dried up?

Indestructible Website: How to Build an EM Based Layout that Won't Break

Design Community — Posted: Jul. 29, 2008

The EM is a measurement just like PX or PT. One EM is equal to the pixel measurement of the current font size. So, for example, 1em on a web page with a font size of 16px equals 16px. The direct relationship between font size and EM allows us to build layouts that scale along with the font size. This means that a visitor with a browser font size set to "large" will see a perfectly scaled version the layout rather than a skinny layout with really big letters.

Pushing the Limits: Building a Semantic Four-column CSS Layout

Design Community — Posted: Jul. 22, 2008

The example we will be looking at uses a combination of relative and absolute positioning to place columns where they are supposed to go. We'll start out with some good semantic XHTML markup for our layout and then we'll jump right into the CSS.

Glorious Web Designer: Talkin' 'Bout My Vocation

Design Community — Posted: Jul. 16, 2008

What's the most important job in the world? This question sounds like something a curious young child would ask. But closer consideration reveals that this question is actually utterly profound. It is one of the most basic teleological inquiries and digs deep into the heart of human purpose. Is web designer the most important job in the world?

Pushing the Limits: A Simple Four Column CSS Layout with a Little Divitis

Design Community — Posted: Jul. 14, 2008

CSS works very well for designing one and two column layouts. It's shaky but workable on three-column layouts. But if you want a four column layout, you have to get downright creative. This article presents an easy, straightforward method for designing a four-column CSS powered layout without deviating too far from the semantic model. Granted, Jeffrey Zeldman would accuse me of a slight case of divitis but at least this method doesn't revert to tables or improper use of unordered lists.

Truth Claims and the Future of Web Design

Design Community — Posted: Jul. 9, 2008

Our view of truth is the Rosetta Stone for how we interpret life, relationships, ethics, vocation, and even design. It's the foundation of our worldview. Without a firm grasp on the popular views of truth we encounter, we will find ourselves in situations where our speech is lost in translation. The question extends out to every area of existence and has enormous implications for the future of our work in web design.

Pushing the Limits: The Perfectly Semantic Three Column CSS Layout

Design Community — Posted: Jul. 7, 2008

Building a three or four column layout on the web without the help of a table can be a difficult task. There are a number of ways to overcome the lack of multi-column support in CSS and none of them is very pretty. The three-column layout is the easiest to achieve without stepping outside the semantic boundaries, so we'll start there.

Analyzing Web Design Through the Christian Worldview Lens

Design Community — Posted: Jul. 2, 2008

Is there really a Christian way to analyze design? Can non-religious works of creativity still be considered Christian? What makes a design good or bad? If you're a Christian designer and you haven't considered these questions, you're probably consenting to a broken worldview without realizing it. It's imperative that we understand the answers to these questions and apply historical Christian principles consistently and relentlessly to our design critiques.

Beyond Redirect: Using ReWriteRule in .htaccess

Web Community — Posted: Jun. 30, 2008

Mod_rewrite is an Apache module that can be accessed from .htaccess files to perform all kinds of complicated URL manipulation. The main mod_rewrite function, RewriteRule, is powered by regular expressions. For the purposes of this tutorial, though, I'll be sticking to commonly used URL rewriting tasks.

12 Tools I Use Every Day as an Independent Web Designer

Design Community — Posted: Jun. 25, 2008

Every web designer has a list of favorite tools—a set of indispensable programs and resources that we couldn't live a day without. Fortunately (or unfortunately) for us there is constantly a newer, better tool emerging for just about everything a web designer does daily. I thought it would be interesting and helpful to share my current list of die-without-it web design tools. Of course, by the time I actually post this article, the list will probably have changed; but that's the nature of the industry.

HTML Transitional What? | The Ins and Outs of HTML Document Type

Web Community — Posted: May. 26, 2008

There's a divisive little tag at the top of every web page called DOCTYPE. It's not divisive because web designers disagree about what should go in that tag or which doctype should be specified (although they argue about that too). It's divisive because half of the web designers barely give a thought to it and the other half would die a bloody death for what's in that tag. Whatever category you happen to fall in, I think you'll appreciate this concise guide to HTML DTDs. Every designer should know the basics and make an informed decision about doctype.
