» The Dreamcast  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by daviddemchuk.

I still have my Dreamcast under my tv. My favourite game is probably Shenmue as well. Shenmue 2 was a little confused and less structured but I enjoyed that as well. It's a shame the series didn't get completed - I wanted to know the rest of the story

» Dodgy Capitalisation  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by Ollie.

Whilst this has potential it doesn't work for everyone. For example a quick google image search shows that the Swedish for capital 9 is ) - capital 0.

Pointless factoid - I only thought of searching for the Swedish keyboard because I have a Swedish friend at work who has his English keyboard set up in Swedish, which means nobody else can type with it as all the punctuation is all over the place.

Interestingly a lot of the Russian keyboards I looked at had 9 as the capital of 9.

Then again (rules is English speaking so maybe it'd be ok...?

Google Reader all the way. I use loads of different pcs so it's good to keep everything portable.

» Loop-The-Loop - Theme Park World  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by BinaryMoon.

Loop the loops? Don't you have to do loads of research and eventually they become available?

Must admit I haven't played Theme Park in donkeys years, but I remember loving it at the time. There's a DS version now as well. I think I'm going to look out for it on ebay :)

Clique

Clique — Posted: Oct. 9, 2007  ...   Last By: jark @ 38 years ago

Is there a way to view all the cliques?

I'm sure there are some others I would like to join but at the moment the only way to see them is to go through all the communities hunting them down.

It would be great if there was a view all button or something that displayed them all (sorted by community?) so that I can find them easier.

Busted Clips

Clique — Posted: Oct. 9, 2007  ...   Last By: Scrivs @ 38 years ago

I just went to a clips post http://9rules.com/art/clips/7360/ and pressed the clippit button and got this error...

bbPress database error: [Duplicate entry '7360' for key 1]
INSERT INTO bb_popular_clips (clip_id, clip_author, community) VALUES (7360, 5, 'art')

It looks like my clipping was successful though so hopefully it's only a small thing.

All looking mighty fine over here. Good fun just browsing around finding all the new bits you've added in. Congrats on all the goodness.

I don't have the dvd but I saw this at the cinema and loved it (my review here :) ). It was clearly created by people who love the whole franchise and I really hope they get to work on a sequel... even if it's straight to dvd.

Just had a quick browse around the pages that I know of and in IE7 it looks like you've done pretty well. Will have a look in IE6 later (don't have it here)

It seems ok in Firefox on windows. Haven't checked in IE and I would guess that's the one you're least looking forward too :)

user mini menu

Clique — Posted: Sep. 27, 2007  ...   Last By: Scrivs @ 38 years ago

not sure what you call this. When you hover over a user you get a little menu pop up (report, award points)

could we add a "add as friend" link too?

Also it's not very easy to actually click the links if you hover at the bottom of the icon and then move diagonally across (to award points) then the menu disappears. You have to move up the image and stay on the image/ popup to stop it going. Maybe add a delay before it disappears or make it a vertical menu (so it covers more of the image).

» Accessibility notes  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by BinaryMoon

I see nothing wrong with moving the leave this clique button. Afterall you want people to stay. Personally I'd make the join button bigger, and brighter, and push the leave button to the bottom of the column

I agree with the highlighting active clique idea though - that's a good un :)

I had a question mark in the title but looks like you're stripping them out (understandable I guess) - It was meant to be asking if people agree with me :)

first prev next last = bad

Clique — Posted: Sep. 27, 2007  ...   Last By: Ollie @ 1 year ago

I've mentioned this to Mike before but I think it should be changed still.

On notes you use "first prev next last" links. I had seen these many times and always assumed it would take me to the next/ previous note. It took me about 6 months to realise it was paged comments. I really think it would be better if these were numbered pages, the same as you see in normal forums.

FWIW I don't think they're bad everywhere. It's mainly the conversation areas I have issues with. The notes/ entries lists are fine as it mirrors convention on blogs.

» blog design no no's  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by philbowell.

Gnorb - I shan't be releasing the Binary Moon design as a theme. It was designed with my content in mind and everything around it is tied to my site. It would be a lot of work to turn it into a theme... although a theme inspired by my site might be good. Also the new design is an evolution of the existing one, rather than a totally brand new site.

Regarding the colours - I wouldn't say I love pastels. The site was designed to do things differently to normal blogs which meant trying to chose colours you don't often see on tech/ gaming/ personal sites :)

Vidar - small fonts are indeed evil

Anadgouda - I would say this depends upon how they are integrated. It could fall under excessive ads, but it can also be ok, depending upon how they are integrated (IMO)

» blog design no no's  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by philbowell.

Inspired by this post - I've just written my own version on my site :)

It's slightly different to my list above. In breif my top ten are...

1. Snap.com
2. Excessive Ads above the fold
3. Overlay & Expandable Ads
4. Inline Ads (those double underlined ones)
5. Del.icio.us/ Twitter in feeds with no opt out option
6. Bad/ No navigation
7. No/ Hidden archives
8. Tiny/ Low contrast text
9. Long lines of closely spaced text
10. No individual post information

» Sims 2 Bon Voyage  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by Pavlusha.

Apparently Animal Crossing is better than MySims on the DS, but on the Wii there are supposed to be some things that make it much more interesting. Not sure what though - and I haven't played them myself so can't say either way.

You can read the review I got this info from over on Eurogamer

» What to get signed?  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by BinaryMoon.

Would you still recommend getting the album art signed if I said that I never use the CD as I have it ripped to my iPod?

If you never use the cd then getting the cd signed would make no difference would it? Try to get the ipod signed instead... :)

FWIW I'd go for the art too

» blog design no no's  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by philbowell.

Oooh ooh - overlay and expandable ads. How I hate thee.

Thankfully not that common on blogs but annoying none the less

... and those contextual inline ads that link random words in articles as well. Unfortunately those ARE common on blogs :(

Estarla - I hope most 9rules members are happy in the knowledge that they have done nothing "wrong" :)

» blog design no no's  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by philbowell.

There's a few good ones her but nothing specific that would stop me from returning to a site. I think my personal top list is currently something like...

  • snap.com previews
  • Half a page of ads before any actual content
  • Requiring javascript or flash
  • Del.icio.us, Twitter etc in rss feed with no way to ignore it (I've emailed people before asking for separate feeds without these)
  • Header does not link to homepage, or worse, no navigation at all (I've seen people do this - it's crazy!)
  • No archives/ way to easily browse past articles
  • tiny/ low contrast text
  • Reeeeaally long lines of text, so I lose my place when I go to the next line
  • No individual post information (date, author, category etc)

Gnorb - hope my pastel shades don't offend you too much - my upcoming realignment only enhances them :) Your comment about non centered designs is a little strange to me though - I don't see how that could be that big a problem?

blog design no no's

Design Community — Posted: Sep. 13, 2007  ...   Last By: philbowell @ 1 year ago

I am working on an update to the design of my site. I'm hoping the changes won't turn anyone off but I got to wondering - what blog features annoy/ frustrate you? What features do you see that make you not want to visit that site again?

I'm not talking about old fashioned stuff like marquees and the blink tag, but things that are used today on sites that should know better. For example I detest the snap.com links - thankfully they're now fairly easy to turn off, but they still annoy me.

So what are your pet hates?

I too have tried it, and found it all a bit pointless so left again. Personally I think calling it a game is rather strong. It's more of a chat/ social network.

At work I am a web and game developer. I do front end (and a small amount of back end) web designer, and flash game development. When I'm not at work, I continue with the web and game development only for my own enjoyment, and I spend as much time as I can with my girlfriend. I also like to play video games, and watch movies when I get a chance.

» Jeans - Do I have too many?  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by DavidBB.

3, but I don't wear them very often these days. 14 sounds like quite a lot to me, but then I doubt I have that many pairs of trousers in total. I've never owned a pair of Levi's. I'm not interested in fashion. As long as clothes look half decent and are comfortable that's enough for me.

I like to have the cds so tend to buy them for real then rip them. I am slowly moving to entirely digital though (hence the 2 - they were fairly recent).

» What TV show did you love, but is now off the air?  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by Oli.

Another vote for Firefly here. I thought Drive was quite interesting too... and they cut that one after like 4 shows (is there something about Nathan Fillion?).

I think Buffy ended at the right time (although it was great while it lasted).

Boy meets world. That show was great - and everyone at school used to called my brother Corey. Corey and my brother looked pretty similar :)

» Is Smoking In Films Good, Or Bad?  ...  Last Reply: 2 months ago by liza.

In my opinion smoking is a disgusting habit and I don't like it when people smoke near me... however I think removing it from films and tv is taking it a bit far.

I agree 100% with removing it from shows aimed at children but adults will likely have made the decision to smoke (or not) a long time ago and are unlikely to be influenced by some "celebrity" in a film.

» What do I read next?  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by BinaryMoon.

All the Michael Chricton stuff I read was years and years ago. Some of it I don't remember but from what I do I would echo Cas's thoughts.

I remember reading the Jurassic Park book after the film came out and thinking how different they are from each other, the book is far better than the movie.

I've read Rising Sun as well and that's better than the film too, but it's not the best of Chrictons work.

I've never read any of his books but I keep hearing good things about Neil Gaiman so I think he will be the next author I try... after I finish the vast stack of books I have spread around my bedroom.

Oh - and I too tend to get books second hand when I can :)
