When I'm on the web I always try to write dates in the format 1 January 2008. That is, I'll type the month out fully. I was just looking at my 9rules messages and saw one that was formatted 2/9/2007 which to me, being English, means the 2nd of September 2007. I knew the note had been written ages ago and it took me 10 seconds to remember that in the US the month is placed first so it was actually sent in February.
This is even more confusing on forms on the web when the month is put first or worse, there are no labels, just three boxes. I once submitted a press release to an American website and it didn't go out because I got the month and day the wrong way around (there were no labels).
When I design date based forms I always use drop downs that have the month written in text since this removes the confusion. When I display dates I always use the month in some textual format (Jan/ January).
In my non web life I work the way the rest of the country does. Online I can't just switch to a different date format... and there is no way to tell whether I should switch or not.
Does this confuse anyone else or am I on my own?

I agree with pretty much all of what you say, but when you want to compare external websites that you have no control over I can't think of any other way.
I shall take a look at compete - thanks for pointing it out :)
