I've been creating my own css framework using blueprint as a starting point. I like the idea of blueprint but didn't like the way it did some things so I've modified it to suit my tastes and now use it on almost every site I make.

What would be the options if I wasn't worried about attribution?

Google Code doesn't allow Creative Commons :(

open source software licensing

Software Community — Posted: Mar. 19, 2008  ...   Last By: BinaryMoon @ 8 months ago

Does anyone else get confused by all of the open source software licenses?

I want to release some code on google code but have no idea what license to use. They're all too technical for me so I was wondering if someone could help.

I want a license that will allow people to use the code as they wish in free/ commercial software. However they have to credit the source, and they have to release any changes under the same license so that they can be added to the core.

The power brick says it's fine but the thing that got me thinking was that the adaptor said it was not for plugs with an earth (the third pin on a uk plug... I think ground is the same thing).

From what I can tell devices with an earth have a metal pin at the top, and ones without have a plastic pin.

I'm starting to think I am worrying about nothing. I've ordered an English to US plug adaptor with a surge protector. Hopefully that will cover me.

» travelling with a laptop  ...  Last Reply: 10 months ago by BinaryMoon.

Just bumping this in the hope there are any Brits with experience around (crosses fingers).

My girlfriends tech support people told her that she should be ok with a normal plug adaptor but I want to double check to be on the safe side and I know there are loads of clever people here :)

travelling with a laptop

Travel Community — Posted: Jan. 9, 2008  ...   Last By: BinaryMoon @ 10 months ago

I am going to the US for a couple of weeks soon and I need to take my laptop with me. I bought a travel adaptor but noticed this evening that it mentions not being suitable for devices with an earth and I am pretty sure my laptop has one of those.

I know nothing about this sort of thing so I was wondering if there were any Brits who have experience with this? I don't particularly want to blow up my laptop so want to make sure I have the correct stuff before the trip :)

I'd really appreciate any help you can give.

» Wordpress Theme: Benighted  ...  Last Reply: 11 months ago by RightOn.

The structure is pretty good. It adjusts well when the text is scaled and is a simple clean design. The problem is it's all too dark for me. The links stand out far more than the actual content, and on a blog i think you'd want the opposite. It wouldn't surprise me if someone on a badly/ wrongly calibrated monitor was unable to read anything but the links.

Also (and this is very minor) I'd be inclined to add some colour into it, if only a few little splashes to cheer things up. It's a nice solid start though, just needs a couple of tweaks to finish it off IMO

Kung Fu Election

Games Community — Posted: Jan. 5, 2008  ...   Last By: seopher @ 11 months ago

I found Kung Fu Election on Digg and thought maybe people here would find it amusing too :)

It's a game based combining the US election with... wait for it... Mortal Kombat.

I'm English so have very little clue about the US election, but I'm also a Flash game developer and I must say, this has been made incredibly well.

Not quite the same but I have something similar running on the homepage of Binary Joy.

FWIW I didn't use any libraries or frameworks and got it running in no more than 40 lines or so (that's a guess - I haven't counted the lines).

Oh yeah - I also did something similar at work - Miniclip.com

» Do you think web standards are boring?  ...  Last Reply: 11 months ago by guillaumeb.

Asa - I certainly don't want the little w3c button at the bottom of my page, not because it's not a good target to aspire too but because it's a waste of everybodies time. Nobody cares about standards apart from designers. The average user won't leave your site because it doesn't validate, they will leave because it doesn't work/ is generally a bit rubbish. If the site doesn't follow standards and works then they are happy - look at myspace for all the evidence you need.

As for getting fired... I doubt most management know or care what standards are. They want a popular website that earns them dollars.

I'm not saying it's not something to aim for but as most have said, in the real world it's just not practical. By all means try but if you can't make it 100% compliant then don't worry - there are far more important things in the world.

» Do you think web standards are boring?  ...  Last Reply: 11 months ago by guillaumeb.

I agree with Mike.

I write xhtml and css all the time - for the day job and for my hobby sites. Provided it works it's good enough. If I have some free time I can go in and tidy things up but generally any errors I have are minor (since I tend to avoid the no-no's through habit).

I would say the average user neither knows, nor cares, about standards so getting the work out there is the most important aspect.

Yeah - we don't have the OLPC over here in the UK :(

I've been tempted by the EEE ever since I heard about it... and today I found out my local pc store has them in stock so I wanted to get some opinions from users before plonking down the £200 needed. Anyone else used one at all?

I get a server could not be found thing too. I know he's taking a break (until the 20th of this month) but I don't know if he's checking his email so I've sent him an one to let him know what's happening.

Armen - that's exactly what I get. Spam is almost always the culprit (not exclusively though).

» Gmail Constantly Crashing Firefox  ...  Last Reply: 11 months ago by seowebdesign.

I've been having the same problem. Bizarrely I use pretty much the same addons at home and at work yet it only crashes at work. It only started happening after they did the precaching thing for the messages.

For now I have gmail in html only mode (there's a link for this at the bottom of the page). It's a bit of a pain but really I shouldn't be using gmail at work anyway :)

» Preemptively Deleting Spam Accounts  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by hthth.

This sort of thing sucks royally though. I detest spammers.

Maybe you could add some sort of captcha thing to the signup page?

I guess most of these fail at the email verification bit so maybe you could record the date people subscribe and then set a monthly cron job to flush all those that are older than 6(?) months with no points.

Oh - I also have no interest in Blu Ray - DVD's are expensive enough as it is, I'm not going to buy something even more pricey.

» Are you buying a PS3 for Christmas?  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by a_romig.

I have no intention of getting a PS3 any time soon. The outrageous price (still too much for me) and more importantly, the fact it has no games I am interested in is stopping me.

I will be mostly getting Wii games for Christmas (Mario Galaxy, Metroid Prime, and Super Paper Mario please)

» Marketing a video games site  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by BinaryMoon.

Seopher - thanks for the comments. I think I am going to try out the pseudo name thing. I need to think about how it will work before starting though - if I get it wrong it could be pretty terrible.

i like the idea of a fictional character who's a bit bitchy and tells it like it is (or he sees it is at least)

David - I know I want to differentiate myself - that was the point of this post (see point number 1 in the original message) :)

I'm not sure how using twitter or squidoo will help me in my quest. Care to elaborate? FWIW I can't stand Twitter and have no intention of using it. I have a Squidoo account and have played with it but see no value in the service, I'm not averse to making more use of it if someone could explain how it would help.

Funnily enough since posting this request a number of things have happened which means my traffic has doubled. I still want it higher (naturally) but it's moving the right way :)

» Marketing a video games site  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by BinaryMoon.

Zero punctuation is just genius - I don't see how I could compete with that.

I can see your point though - I don't like to be confrontational/ negative, which is exactly why I started Binary Joy in the first place. Maybe I can think of some way of doing something like this though - it could be fun.

Maybe I should find an alter ego who likes to critique video games in an amusing/ sarcastic way.

I don't have the time (or the voice) to do youtube reviews, and I wouldn't want to copy someone else anyway - but this has given me an idea or two. Thanks

Marketing a video games site

Marketing Community — Posted: Nov. 22, 2007  ...   Last By: BinaryMoon @ 1 year ago

I want to increase traffic to my video games blog - in particular Binary Joy

So I am wondering 2 things

  1. How do I differentiate myself from the rest of the video gaming sites (and there are lots)?
  2. How can I market myself to people?

Obviously I know about standard blog marketing tactics (comments, signatures, social media etc) but they only go so far.

I'm guessing part of the problem is that there are so many sites out there that write about video games. When I started the site I tried to focus on good games that people will enjoy, ignoring all the crap out there. Now I am wondering about flipping things around and talking about rubbish stuff as well - occasionally being a little abusive to the truly awful games I find.

I'm just confused really. I genuinely think my site is good, and I want to make it more successful, but I just can't think how :S

helpdesk recommendations

Software Community — Posted: Nov. 20, 2007  ...   Last By: jark @ 1 year ago

I'm looking for some helpdesk software for doing support for my various online projects but I don't have any experience with this sort of thing so am looking for recommendations.

I am on a budget of between $0 and $10 a month - I don't need anything big and complicated. Branding would be nice, although not essential and I don't mind whether it's self hosted or not.

At the moment mojo helpdesk is top of my list... but it's also the only software I have found that didn't look like it was made in the early 90's.

» What do you think about Netvibes  ...  Last Reply: 11 months ago by sbrada.

Can't see the point myself. Functionally I think it's great and I have tried to use it but I only ever set up my page and then don't visit again.

I'd be interested to know what people actually do with it?

» Deleting Entries  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by deeter.

I'm partial to the idea of permalinks. The whole point of the name is that they're permanent. I don't want people to link to my stuff only for it to disappear so I fully intend to keep every page on my site as it is, irrespective of how rubbish or pointless it might be.

» Your "good design" bible, if you have one...  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by veckd.

This doesn't really help but I'm not one for tech books. The interwebs has everything I need on it... for free.

With your problem, I would simply look at different websites you like and analyse why you like them. Break them down into parts and work out what works and what doesn't, then steal the ideas. It sounds evil but really that's how many (most?) people work. Whether you realise it or not you're inspired from all around - what you need to do is take your inspiration and make it your own, and turn it into something useful.
