The graphic card requirements were actually for Myst 4 and 5, but I'm guessing I'll have to go with the Windows version of the games. (At elast 1 through 3. I don't think I can do 4 or 5 on that computer.)

As for the FFX glyps... that's a great idea. (FFX was one of my favorite games.) I'll take a look at those.

1) The video card you have in your macbook is orders of magnitude better than what myst required, I'm sure it's the same with the PC. In fact, the difficulty you may run into is configuring your video DOWN far enough. Myst ran at 640x480 256 colors.

Your best bet is probably the PC. Windows usually has more backwards compatibility lingering than OS X. There is rosetta of course, and classic mode, but I have no idea how likely your chances are with those.

This may also be helpful.

Look at the art-rich games. RPGs tend to have massive amounts of artwork in them. Final Fantasy X had "Glyphs" for each of the temples, which are very pleasing intricate designs that would not look out of place on a wall in anyone's home really. I once engraved one into a piece of acrylic, put a frame around it, and lit it via led on the edges of the plastic which makes the etch marks glow. I spent way too much time on that, though.

So here's the deal: my wife and I have decided that we want to decorate at least part of our new home in such a way as to give it a Myst-like feel. Thing is, neither of us has any of the games anymore, so while we both remember liking a lot of the decor, we don't remember exactly what made it so appealing to us. (And I can't seem to find the right pics online of the things we're both remembering.) I'd just go out and buy them, but according to UbiSoft, none of their games will run on a Mac with OS X 10.4 or greater. Also, aparently the video card on my MacBook can't run the game.

My questions:

1) Is there any way for me to run at least the original Myst on my MacBook (2.2GHz, forgot the video card quality, but it's not too good)? (Riven and Exile would be great, too.) Or must it be on my PC, a Dell Inspiron 1501 laptop with a cheap video card?

2) Has anyone played the later games? What did you think of them?

3) Is there an online repository somewhere with lots of Myst pics? The biggest I've found is the Mysterium, but maybe there's something better under the radar.

While I always wanted to play Myst and its sequels, it looks like I waited way too long to play them. Damn.

Finally, can anyone give any video game (or scifi-related) decorating tips for my home? (We've thought about making the front door a Stargate, but that was just WAY over the top. For now.

I'm not really sure if I'm excited for Spore though. But if the xbox will be $199, hell, I'll pick it up just because I saved a shitload of money.

Another benefit to being social and even interacting in the general chat channels is that when people get to know you a bit more (you become more recognizable) it's easier to get them together for group quests or instances. Theere were many times when I played that I had a "favor" list where I owed someone something or they owed me something.

I thought he was new too which is why my first thought was to have some patience. Then he did the exact same thing again except this time he took the pet with him so it was tactical. He was a higher level than me too. At first I thought he "slipped" off the path but the second time he clearly jumped. Not sure. It was weird.

The game is filled with idiots, but also wonderful people that enjoy sharing their knowledge with you. Obviously the groups tend to get better as you progress in the game because there seems to be a weeding out process with people.

That seems to be very true and that makes sense. Although I'm not new to the game I am new to the server. It's just odd that when I group with someone "officially" is it different than when I partner up with people. Had a great time raiding Refugee Pointe over the weekend.

What is great about groups in a social environment is that they work the exact same way they do in the real world, without effective communication they fall apart. Once the first incident happened I would've laughed at him and ask that he not do it again and show some patience. Being in a start zone you almost have to assume the person is new not only to the class, but to the game as well.

I have been in some shitty groups, but more times than not I have been in some great ones and the greats one always had great communication. It was established early what would be done. If I was new to an instance and figured that others had been there already I had no problem with letting them know that I was new so if there are any surprises to let me know.

The game is filled with idiots, but also wonderful people that enjoy sharing their knowledge with you. Obviously the groups tend to get better as you progress in the game because there seems to be a weeding out process with people.

Same applies guilds, there has to be a chemistry between you and the other people to make it work. I believe I was part of a couple of guilds before I settled into one that I enjoyed. I don't think it is luck when it comes to the social aspect of the game because you control so many parts of it.

I recently started a character on a PvP server on World of Warcraft and I have to admit, I socialize more on the PvP server than on the PvE server. It started with giving warnings about Alliance characters in the area and grew into conversing with people. My friend's list is filled with people I actually talk to and I have fun in the game. I figured since I was doing great with socializing, why not step things up a notch and accept one of the zillion group requests I receive?

What did I do that for?

I was working on Retaking Windrunner. I hate this quest with a passion. I was closer to completion than not when a hunter asked to group. I accepted. If you aren't familiar with the quest, this is the front of the "building" and this is the rear area where there are more mobs to kill. Note the spiral nature of the ramps...it's important. The first screenshot shows the average spacing of the mobs when they are fully spawned. When I took the screenshot there were two groups working on this quest so the spawns weren't fully in place.

I accepted the group request and we stood there a minute. I asked if he was ready just as he took off going down one of the spiral paths.

And fell through it to the next tier. I couldn't believe my eyes.

Now if you noticed I said I grouped with a hunter. His pet didn't follow him by jumping off the top trier to the second. It took the path, drawing all the mobs it passed right to its owner. He was dead before I could get to him. I figure everyone makes a mistake. He said he was on his way back so I waited. He comes back, heals up, we're ready to roll.

I'll be damned if he didn't do it again except this time the pet jumped of the tier with him. Unfortunately, he jumped right into the mobs. I stealthed past some mobs, was able to reach him, killed off the ones around him - which finished my portion of the quest. I had to heal up and while I my toon was healing guess what? He was gone AGAIN. I had no idea where he went. I just saw his avatar turn into a ghost. Yeah, I was done with him.

This is usually my luck groups. I know people have great fun. Me? I get the morons.

Where I have splendid success is with working with others to kill Alliance. We don't formally group but we work together to kill the enemy and once that task is complete, continue on with what we were doing. With that scenario I'm having a blast.

If you play (or played) World of Warcraft do you have the same kind of luck I do with random groups or PUGs (for instances)? Do you socialize in the game or are you a loner like I used to be?

You have to be careful with theorycrafting in WoW because it only takes effect if you twink or at endgame. Plus you need to be in the endgame instances to really appreciate it, otherwise you are just pretending you won the lottery and what you would do with the money.

I'm really looking forward to Diablo and SC2. Diablo a bit more since I missed the D2 train and it has a lot of similarities to WoW.

I know me and my friends have an issue with games and that is if we applied ourselves in other areas of life like we do the games we play we would be hugely successful. The problem is games offer enjoyment and diving into them and getting loss isn't something that I ever regret, but it is something I look forward to. The game that did that for me was World of Warcraft.

Before that it was Civilization. Before that Halo. At any time in my life there always seems to be a game that I just can't put down because I am looking at new ways to improve or discovering new things. I love games that seem to have an endless depth to them that allows me to uncover the goods every hour I play.

Some of the more throwback games that I always had trouble putting down were King's Quest III (points if you even remember that game), Super Mario Bros 3 and Sonic 2.

We all have them, what's your's?

I don't think the new DVD formats matter at all. In the music world, we're all buying MP3 files because they're convenient. We know it's possible to get higher quality, but the convenience makes up for it - and it's good enough to enjoy and not worry about. There were even high quality audio discs at one stage - remember SACD or DVD-Audio? - Both sounded lovely, but really died at birth.

The downloadable HD versions of movies are good enough to enjoy without having to pay through the nose for a disc. A few years ago I got rid of my old VHS tape player because I just didn't use it. Late last year I got rid of my DVD player because I didn't use that either. I do watch films though and have rented movies through net services and the Xbox movie store.

As for ISP's throttling bandwidth, we've moving in to an age where we'll need more and more - any ISP trying to slow that down will result in them losing customers as people move to ones that don't do it. Like it or not, people will need more bandwidth and they need to work out how to deliver it rather than stifle it because they don't know how to deal with it.

In the UK, some ISP's moaned about the amount of bandwidth users were using for the BBC iPlayer - but these were ISP's that I wouldn't touch with a barge poll. The good ones just get on with it.

Currently BT, the ex-state telecomms provider, is embarking on rolling out their ADSL2+ and also their fibre network, resulting in ADSL speeds up to 20Mb/sec and Fibre speeds of 100MB/sec. Things have to move on, and I really don't see discs with more capacity having a place in the future.

Tyme, to add to your point, even people who don't even know what Blu-Ray is and still buy the PS3, eventually find out what Blu-Ray is and spread the word to their friends. So even though they aren't really tech savvy, hi-def video isn't a hard concept to pick up.

Sony isn't dropping the price because they are selling enough PS3s to justify keeping it higher. Sony doesn't care why they are selling the units, only that they sell.

When I was in Best Buy the other day there were people who were purchasing PS3's because they were told it was a great Blu-Ray player, but were completely ignorant on what Blu-Ray was. They were there because it was "the thing" to do. They knew they can watch movies on PS3 and if they want, one day, they could play games. For the same amount of money why not get the PS3? That's what they were thinking.

Unfortunately, if that trend continues, the game developers and gamers lose out. A hell of a lot of systems being sold only for the player means the games are going to tank in the long run.

Well with HDDVD essentially dead... what else would you pick if they needed a high res disk format?

Downloading BluRay quality video is INSANELY large.

If I was MS, I wouldn't put a blu-ray in it. I think the format is a failure. It may have caught on if it had not been for the format war, but I'm not certain. Most of the techies I know that are the people who appreciate and notice the higher resolution are much more likely to be watching things on their computer, on their DVR, or streaming via Apple TV, Netflix, etc.

480p is really a lot more resolution than your average american viewer is accustomed to. Unless I've personally set up their system, I don't really know any non-techie who is running component or hdmi output into their televisions.

Sure there's sales, there's hardcore AV enthusiasts, and there always will be. The need and desire to upgrade really isn't there for most people, and I don't see anything they can do to change that short of getting everyone to stop producing dvds.

Putting a Blu-Ray drive into a box doesn't take the focus away and I'm sure the only reason not to do it is as you said because paying Sony isn't an option.

Yeah stick it to Sony by paying them to use their tech =)

It doesn't even serve their best interest - MS need to focus on growing a high-performance, affordable IPTV service.

Would be interesting to see where sales for the X-Box go if more ISP's jump on the bandwidth throttling bandwagon with Time Warner etc.

Focusing on downloadable content is the current trend and I'd love to just download stuff to my console but not if I'm going to have to ramp up my monthly bills to do it.

Right now it's not a bad idea though.

I must admit I'm a bit confused since I could have sworn I have seen a ton of reports saying that the 360 is coming out with Blu-Ray in the fall. I can understand them putting a focus on downloadable content since that is the future, but why not stick it to Sony just a little bit more and match them feature for feature?

Besides downloadable content is cool, but eventually you will run out of room on an Xbox so I would love to see their solution for that.

I'm no fan of Sony. You could go as far as saying I hate them, but I'm not sure that's quite the case, despite me banging out images like this:

You've got to hand it to Sony; they f**ked up a buttload of times and they're still here with their console.

I only mention all this because I'm going to do something I'm not known for and defend Sony. One lost exclusive isn't game over.

Firstly, has the BR360 actually been confirmed yet? I know everybody thinks it's a great idea but there are still a lot of people saying it'll never ever ever ever happen. Sony still have this edge and with the PS3 still being one of the best HD players around, it's a first good option for lots of people just getting into high-def content.

And even if MS does implement a BR player, how much is it going to knock the price up? Sony wont let them have it cheaply. There's only £100 in it at the moment (and you get more from the PS3 anyway).

This isn't a 360 exclusive. This isn't Square saying they're changing sides. If anything they just want more money from more people without forcing a platform on them ... which is fair enough. Good for them.

And let's not forget that Sony are renowned for holding back the power of their consoles for later in their life cycle. My first experience with this was when they released Gran Turismo. It came late in the PSX's life but it used so much of its potential that it blew my face off. On paper the PS3 is ahead of the 360 so I wouldn't be surprised if we start to see games edging ahead.

And the PS3 is a pretty decent xvid player and it'll let you (easily) install Linux onto it to serve as another computer if you need it. A pretty cheap one too.

Sony are still bastards though. Aaah, that feels better...

I wouldn't say it's the nail, but it is a big blow. PS3s are starting to sell well now, but with the Bluray 360 coming out in fall only thing Sony has is processing power and when all games look alike that doesn't bode too well for them.

Haha, this is cute. I went to VideoJug (first time) and I looked up, 20 minutes had passed. I learned something. I didn't know you can plug exercise machines into the Wii. I have to stay off that site for now.

Thank you for posting this.
