Game is invading real life

I just got Katamari Damacy and I really like it. (If you don't know what it is, it's a fairly simple concept--you have a ball and your goal is to roll up items to make it bigger. The bigger the ball is, the bigger items you can roll up. It's actually a lot of fun.)
Anyway, I have been playing it quite a bit the past few days and now when I am out and about I have a strange sensation... I find myself sorta interpreting things as though I am in the game. For instance, I was driving around today and looking at things that I saw like road signs and thinking, "hey, I bet I could roll up those road signs right now."
Seriously.
Isn't that weird? Has anything like this ever happened to you? There's gotta be a name for it or something. Anyone know?

Joe I love that game, haven't played in awhile though, but boy was it fun. I don't think I played it enough to have the same urges as you though, which is a real shame because that sounds like a lot of fun.

My first thought after seeing the title of the game: I wonder if it's kind of like making Temari balls? I don't think that there were ever any toys or the like wrapped in the balls, but they were used as toys themselves at various points in history. Sounds like an interesting game, and I do wonder if the creators thought about Temari balls when they were designing it.
As for it invading real life, I have something like this happen frequently when I'm really heavily engaged in a certain task for a long period. I have weird dreams involving quilting tasks, but with other materials than fabric, like things you'd never make a quilt out of. If I'm in the middle of a particularly intense task creatively, my subconscious is always problem solving even when I'm doing something else totally unrelated, and I'll have totally odd thoughts that seem to combine things from everyday life and whatever creative issue I'm facing at that moment. Sometimes those odd thoughts will yield creative solutions though, so it works.
Maybe it's just a natural thing, Joe, a normal side effect of your current obsession? ;)

It's a normal thing, Joe. After engrossing myself in the Half Life 2 one weekend I walked around town, saw these discarded petrol barrels, and wondered where the game designers put the zombies.

A friend of mine played Baldur's Gate on the PC a lot and then told me that he had dreams where the people had little green control circles around their feet.

Oh man, Katamari Damacy is super wacky weird and the first night after I got the game I had the weirdest dreams. I remember something about taking my ear off and putting it in my pocket, and at one point I was talking to someone in an old TV (the king from the game probably).

This happens to me more times then I'd like to admit. I remember one time after playing Gran Turismo 3 for an entire weekend I had to run and get some milk. It was winter and as I was coming up to a corner I thought about how I should twist the wheel just right to break the back-end of the car loose and slide around the turn. I had to stop myself and remember how you just can't do those things in real life in the middle of town without some consequences.
All bets were off when I got back to my subdivision. Our station wagon handled those snow-packed curves like a dream ;)

I have done that exact same thing with that game.
Or I'm at the grocery store and think there's not enough small stuff on the floor... no way to get big enough to pick up the people.

It's true! Katamari takes over your life! And makes a damned good cake too!
Also, if you've not seen them, there are a fine selection of Katamari shirts over at the Panic store!

I have that a lot when I Photoshop for a long time... I have dreams about Photoshopping stuff and I look at things and think, I could make this look better... where is my clone tool.

Yeah, I've done that as well in the past. I wonder -- this confusion must increase as alternate reality games become more popular (games on mobile devices that take your position/the real world into account).
Sure that'll freak many out.

I do that all the time. My big thing is dreams, though. If I get addicted enough to something (Katamari Damacy and Babylon 5 come to mind), I start having dreams about it, I begin becoming obsessed with it, finding out everything I can about it, etc. On the bright side, it tends to help with my writing career, as I seem to use it as food for thought in the creation of new stories.

I know what you are talking about. One time I was taking a ton of photos for an exhausting 10 hours straight and then afterward I looked at everything as though I was going to take a photo of it.
Then this other time I was painting watercolors for three days straight and I began to see everything in a different way--it's hard to describe, but it was sorta like I was translating everything into how I would paint it.

I think it's just the creative portion of your brain still being engaged in task.
My wife says I'm crazy but it happens to all the creative people I know.
