Over at the Guardian there's a great article about the destruction of the banana as a plant species altogether within the next 10 years.

"Two fungal diseases, Panama disease and black Sigatoka, are cutting a swath through banana plantations, just as blight once devastated potato crops."

I'm not a huge banana person but I know many friends who are, and this would be devastating to the normal routine of people who enjoy fruit in their cereal, smoothes, etc.

This is bananas! Sorry, I couldn't resist. This sucks since bananas are my favorite fruit and source of potassium.

I've never really got on board with the whole banana thing... They're just a little too squishy... Perhaps they're too phallic and I'm a closet homophobe... I just can't put my finger on it... They don't taste that hot either.

But bananas are about as GM as you get... We've been selectively breeding these things since we found them and they're nothing like they originally were. I'm sure we'll find another unnatural way to prolong their existence against these fungi.

Bananas are my friends.

I'm sure we can control it - but we have to go back to nature, not away from it. Damn accelerated growth :/

I've lived without bananas. Anyone in Australia should remember the 800% price increase due to Cyclone Larry earlier this year. So I've haven't had bananas for a whole year... it aint that bad.
