Favorite Sushi

I love sushi. Thank goodness in Tampa we have a huge selection of sushi restaraunts so I am never too far from fulfilling my addiction. Currently my favorite roll is a Tampa roll which includes white fish, smelt roe, scallion and spicy sauce. Basically though I love it all.

What's your favorite? And please don't say California because if you do that means you probably just get your sushi from the grocery store. Yeah I said it.

A lot to choose from, but my all time favorite is spicy tuna with shishito pepper.

Oh man I haven't had decent sushi for over a year now. Yo Sushi and what-not here in London just don't cut it.

For me it's nigirizushi, especially salmon. Very simple: plain rice, a touch of wasabi and some fresh salmon, together with a small side plate of soy sauce and some pickled ginger...ah that's heaven

Nothing wrong with sticking to the basics. Only thing I can remember having at a sushi restaurant and being grossed out was Quail egg. That just didn't sit well with me.

Mmmm. Sushi. Unagi nigiri is probably my fave right now. You haven't had good sushi until you've had it at some of Vancouver's finer Japanese establishments. My treat if you ever make your way to BC, Scrivs.

Well I know it's not "sushi" but my favourite is sake (salmon) sashimi. Andrew, have you tried Hi Sushi at Soho before? My friends and I always go there for the eat-all-you-can buffet (including unlimited sake sashimi!) for just £15, great deal :)

Thanks for the recommendation Weisheng, I'll try it and see. I guess you're right, it's better to keep an open mind. Problem for me is that I used to have access to the real deal from the motherland of sushi, could get top-notch sushi delivered to your door in 20 minutes for half the price you'd pay in the UK...yeah I know...quit whining and deal with it :)

Yeah sushi is way too expensive in the UK, considering the raw materials aren't really that costly and most of the sushi is not being prepared by "master chefs". Back home in Singapore, sushi is generally way cheaper than here. If you want delivery, my household has been ordering from demaezushi. It's expensive, but a good option when you need that Japanese fix when stuck at home :)

Mmm, I love, love, LOVE!!! smoked salmon. *droooooool* Close runner up would be salmon skin maki. (Can you tell where I'm going with this? :p)

I'm not knowledgeable with sushi, but I believe the first time I had sushi, it was the yellowtail coated with ginger that wowed me. I love that little jolt to the brain.

Large - fatty tuna! Saying "Oo-Toro, please", you are a connoisseur rightly.

It's all about the nigiri sushi.

I love maki (rolls). I consider the Rainbow Roll the universal sushi standard, as it provides a large selection of fish on top with a California (or California-like) center. By trying any new sushi restaurant's Rainbow Roll, I learn a lot about the restaurant's quality, portions and creativity.

Here in St. Louis, we're actually blessed with many fine sushi restaurants. Having done a little globe trotting recently, I've come to appreciate that even more.

I haven't had sushi in a while and I feel I am upsetting the sushi gods because of it. Maybe I will get some tonight, I have a craving for some eel. The Rainbow Roll is delicious.

Salmon is most definitely my favorite common sushi. But I love rainbow rolls and caterpillar rolls (with the avocado on top). I tend to like unagi (eel) and yellowtail, too. I could talk about sushi all day...

I love the rolls where they stick in a piece of soft shell crab. But I will eat almost anything if it's at a nice place. Recently, I had grilled yellowtail collar (there is a name, but I cannot remember it) -- not sushi, I know, but really, really good. It is clearly almost lunchtime here on the west coast.

Don't think I've ever had a caterpillar roll. Definitely going to have to look that one up.

I love love love Caterpillar rolls. And tempura shrimp rolls. If you're ever in San Diego, and you need a sushi fix, go to Ichiban on Univsersity St., in the Hillcrest area. Best...sushi....evah!

I love virtually all sushi, but one of my absolute favorites is the Philadelphia roll, which is tuna and cream cheese. Sounds kind of eh, but it's delicious.

Now I have a craving... this is not good.

I'm gonna mark that one in my book, Joshawesome! I'll be in the Gaslamp during Memorial Day Weekend. Don't know if that's close...

Ooh, Erin, I do need to rekindle my taste for the Philadelphia. I haven't had that one in a long time...

@estarla: it's a ten minute drive from the Gaslamp. I can give you better directions then mapquest if you want. :)

I like most kinds of sushi, except for tamago I guess. I usually order maguro and sake.

@ErinR: I'd love to try the Philadelphia roll. I love cream cheese! Oh, you gave me an idea, I haven't mixed cream cheese with wasabi yet, maybe I'll try that.

Went and had me a Rainbow and Tampa roll today, loved the Rainbow (Tampa is always good). Didn't get my eel though cuz I would be full :(

You name it, I'll eat it.

I prefer Sashimi though.

I love Sashimi. And even though it's not fish...I love Edamame. I think that's how you spell it. :/

I like all sushi, but my favorite is eel, either eel sushi or eel nigiri. I als like salmon sashimi.

PunkNoodles -- have no fear! If you like California Rolls stand tall and revel in it. A nicely made California Roll is not something to be ashamed of. (I have them all the time, in a sweet bento box from the great sushi restaurant right near where I work -- along with some miso and a little salad. This is one of the reasons I work, in fact. That and needing to pay the bills.)

They just don't get old! To tell you the truth, I don't have the courage to try the kinds with raw fish.

I'm not big on the spicy sushi but salmon and seaweed rocks in my book.

Big fan of the eel over here. I've got two in the freezer that I've been planning to make some unagi donburi with once it got hot enough.

I mostly like nigiri and futomaki, and I make onigiri at home a lot stuffed with different things. I like hamachi, ebi, unagi, sweet shrimp and fatty tuna. A nice tamago here and there is great too.

Inari and chirashi are excellent to try out if you've had your fill of the normal fare.

There're a couple of good places to get Sushi here in Pittsburgh (believe it or not) - Pacific Ring in Squirrel Hill has a really good roll named after itself, and another one named the Pittsburgh roll which is some type of pink seaweed and kind of crunchy; both are excellent.

Another great place is Nakama in the South Side, where they decorate their rolls - the last time I ordered they brought me out a huge roll all done up like a caterpillar.

I love sushi! So much that it's the only thing I eat that breaks my vegetarianism... but something about raw food, straight from the oceans only hours before, that really makes me smile!

Karmatosed: I love salmon and seaweed.

Karsh: Yes, I love eel. I think it stems from my childhood, when my Italian grandma would cook eel for special occasions. Since then, I love it as sushi and nigiri. I prefer the nigiri to the sushi, if I want a more filling meal. I love unagi donburi!

Well, I had sushi for the first time last night and I had a completely new roll that I just had to share.

It's called the Tico (Costa Rican) Roll and it was: shitakke mushrooms, cream cheese, cucumber, and crab covered in -- get this!! -- plantain (banana-like, but you have to cook it). Then it was drizzled with an eel sauce. Sounds strange, I know, but it was actually delicious!

It's fun to see what kinds of sushi rolls are invented depending on the tastes of the culture.

Anything with Unagi in it :)

@ErinR: That sounds heavenly! I'd like to try. As far as Japanese-Latin American mixes, there's this restaurant in NYC called Sushi Samba. It fuses Japanese and Brazilian...they have some crazy rolls to try, too!

I had the spicy conch not too long ago and although it was awesome it was crazy hot. I would definitely eat it again though. Also anything with eel gets my pick.

Watched the good eats on sushi last night. I'm going to have to give a try at finding a source for some of the flash-frozen fish (frozen on the boat it's caught with.) There's just no source for good fresh fish in my area unless it's catfish.

For those of you who aren't directly near a fish market (like us in Oklahoma or North Texas etc.), find a large scale supermarket with a good seafood department. If they have a full time staff to manage the fish you should be good.

The fish monger at my Whole Foods was able to overnight Sushi grade tuna from Japan for a fairly decent price.

Personally, I love anything with tuna and salmon (not salmon skin)

My favorites...

Nigiri - Salmon, Fatty Tuna, Eel, Octopus and Squid.

I'm not a big "roll" fan as they've become too trendy around here where I live and contain ZERO meat. Apparently Sushi is interchangeable with "veggie roll" here in Oklahoma.

I've had good rolled sushi but I just roll my eyes when someone hands me a rolled up avacado/carrot thing and says "try this sushi!"

Not a big fan of the cream cheese type rolls. They seem to dominate the sushi.

I have to add, one thing I simply WILL NOT EAT as it almost made me vomit when I tried it was Uni (Sea Urchin)... which is basically the gonads from a Sea Urchin.

Basically imagine something that looks like it was extracted from a diaper, glistening on your plate. YEAH, it's THAT delicious.

Nigiri: Freshwater eel. Roll: Salmon skin, hand roll. I'm pretty willing to try most sushi, as I really love it, but there are so many fish (including really good blue fin tuna) in which the fisheries are so depleted I won't eat them.

Green River Rolls (eel) is always a favorite, but if I'm going all out, I just order chirashi. There are a ton of sushi bars in Metro Detroit, and my goal is to sample the chirashi at all of them! My favorite so far is at Shiro in Novi. Yum.

Well, here in Virginia Beach, we have an amazing sushi joint called Sakura. From their speciality rolls I have to say the Tiger Roll and the Christmas Tree Roll is my favorite. But my favorite roll all together is the Spicy Tuna.
Sushi is GOD. :)
