I am curious what other people will think about this issue, especially people with food blogs.

It is very possible that due to the Internet even if you come up with a recipe all by yourself that someone else may have already come up with that recipe. I mean just do a search on Banana bread and you can find tons of recipes. Some that are exactly the same but claim originality and some that differ only by a half cup of this or a teaspoon of that.

So I guess my question is what do you guys think about posting recipes. If I know where the recipe came from, and it isn't mine I will definitely give credit, but what if you do come up with your own, and then find out that someone else out there has the same exact recipe?

Also what about recipes that have been handed down, but you know aren't original. I have a recipe for a dessert my grandmother used to make, then my mom, and now me, but I know my grandmother got it out of a paper. I don't know which paper, or how I would even begin to find out that information, so do I just post the recipe and say this is a recipe that has been handed down, but came from a newspaper or is that even important?

If you put your blood sweat and tears into a recipe and publish it, I see nothing wrong with keeping it up. Even if someone else comes up with the same combination of stuff and gets the same result. It was your effort so go for it.

As for the family pass down recipe, if you can't find the source I see nothing wrong with mentioning it's a pass down and you lost the source. If someone can find it for you, I'd post the source then.

Publish it. I put up recipes on my cooking section as I do them. Like, I'll have my laptop there and if I think the dish is somewhat interesting and remember to do so, I'll type it out while I'm cooking.

I'm sure as I go along I'll recreate things that have existed for a long time. So what?

Post it. Noone can copyright a collection of ingredients. So long as you're not intentionally copying something yours is bound to be different in some way or other. If you're in any real doubt you could put a comment on your blog as such - that's the beauty of blogs, you can air your thoughts without it looking odd.
