What kind of music do you prefer to listen to while getting work done? I usually like something calming like some jazz, or if I have to meet that 5pm deadline that I promised I turn up the BPM to some dance music lol. What works for you ?

It totally depends on my activity. I can't read or write very well with music on. I prefer PHP coding with post-rock (Mogwai, And You Will Know Us By The Trail of Dead). I design with anything from USK (Gameboy Techno) to Mika to Pinback to the Smashing Pumpkins.

For me I generally like to listen to music that doesn't distract me, or that I've heard so many times I can 'sing along' without even thinking about it. This is either movie soundtracks - which are great background music - or The White Stripes - which are my favorite band.

I start with Morning Becomes Eclectic then no music for awhile (just white noise) then I end my days with some last.fm for whatever I'm in the mood to hear.

I highly recommend trying out MBE for a day or two. They have great shows.

Depends. If I've really got to figure something out I prefer silence. For things that don't require full brain power, I jump back and forth between the Indie Pop Rocks channel on SomaFM or I'll have talk radio on.

Mainly I like listening to trance because it gets me in the zone. Though, on some occasions I like to listen to a little metal here and there because it gets the blood pumping in ways that trance does not.

More often than not, at work anyhow, I just listen to my personal last.fm channel. Seems to play the best mix of music I dig.

When I'm working on websites or design work I can listen to pretty much anything, but for school work (studying, writing papers, researching, etc) I tend to listen to lounge music or something soft and non-distracting like classical guitar.

When I'm writing I like silence, but when I paint, sketch, or do some other type of visual art I like a variety, sometimes AC/DC, sometimes Queen, or Pink . . . I like Cajun music for landscapes - Elton John all the time.

Depends. If I'm writing fiction, usually classical, jazz, techno, or jungle. If I'm tech writing, JPop or heavy rock music. If I'm working out... Tony Robbins, the TED speeches, or anything about science/personal development. If I'm driving: Books on CD or Weird Al Yankovic. If I'm doing work around the house, Christmas classics or Jpop. If I'm cooking, classical, especially baroque, or movie scores.

I think I've covered just about all of it.

I've been enjoying listening to Pandora for a while now. I like to plug in an artist and see what other musicians it decides to play for me as well. Iron and Wine created a good station for me - pretty relaxing and folksy.

Serius Classic Rewind, channel 15, all day long!

It depends on my mood, but most of the time I'm with cdevroe - "music that doesn't distract me, or that I've heard so many times I can 'sing along' without even thinking about it."

These days it tends to be movie soundtracks, songs from musicals, Disney music, Michael Buble or Frank Sinatra, and J-pop (primarily Arashi and RAG FAIR). Occasionally Christmas music - no matter what month of the year it is. hahah!

But if I'm attempting to wrestle with some CSS or something, I tend to turn off my music because it gets distracting... Heh.

While at work, I'm usually listening to JPop (Koda Kumi, move, Aikawa Nawase, Ayumi Hamasaki, etc) or various 80's music. In the car, it varies from Weird Al, mixed mp3 CDs, and my Pimsleur CDs.

In the morning I dig softer sounds like Mogwai or Explosions In The Sky, or My Morning Jacket. After I've had my coffee and I really get moving, I like different types rock (Motion City Soundtrack, Muse, Incubus, 311) to keep me going. After work at the gym I put on Rage Against The Machine, Rise Against, or The Suicide Machines. Third Eye Blind puts me to bed.

I will normally listens to something that won't make me feel sleepy. Sometimes listening to some good music loops also helps, altho it might be repeating but eventually I feel I am not actually listening to it but it keeps me staying alert.
Other than that of course some of my fav songs and OSTs.

I'm still in school, and the best thing to listen to while studying, is some classical calming music...(especially when studying for Maths and Science lol). I come back from school stressed, angry, and tired. My best choice would always be classical music. Or basically, anything just to help you calm down!...(soft music)

I would recommend Tommy Emmanuel since it stays nicely in the background and it mostly has no lyrics.

I've been enjoying Pandora and Deezer a lot, especially the latter. It's a great way for creating custom playlists and for checking out new artists.

I'm very glad that a co-worker has XM radio, I enjoy hearing good songs a month or two before they are strangled to death on normal radio.

KEXP.org, usually, but sometimes I get in moods.

The past few days it's been a lot of Television and the Velvet Goldmine soundtrack.

A couple of weeks ago it was nothing but Wu-Tang and their individual efforts, especially Liquid Swords and Bobby Digital.

Sometimes I'll just listen to one artist for days on end... I swear I listened to nothing but Broken Social scene for a whole month over the summer.

I know I'm in the minority, but I am definitely not a music fan, especially when I'm working. Nothing for me!

I normally listen to something that gets me in a bit of a creative mood, eg, I might listen to some of jimmac's, or i might prefer something with more beat like some of john bulter trio's stuff.

Anything as long as it's not Hip-hop.. :D XD

Eh im a screamo/metal kid at heart. I listen to that always, but I guess that type of music is reflected in my design. Its usually pretty grunge-ish.

I like to hear slow and soulful songs while working

i love tunes with a good driving beat. underworld's dubnobasswithmyheadman album is awesome, especially dirty epic. i've been needing more music for work......

Anything really except for podcasts. My musical tastes include hip-hop and techno so mainly those two. I'm with SaulGood, anything with a driving beat is good.

Alternative if I'm in need of inspiration, rock if I'm on a roll, classical if some work needs my full attention. Music is needed pretty much 24/7 the silence bothers me whether I am working or not, it's just boring.

Lately I've been listening to Porcupine Tree. Other than that I usually listen to something calm like Kemopetrol or Zero 7, or something with Japanese lyrics so I don't focus myself on the words, rather than the job at hand.

Nothing, dead quiet silence.

I am Generally a soft Rock or trance person per say. As long as it doesn't have lyrics because then it will just get me to singing instead of working. I guess it really depends on a little bit of my mood to on weather I listen to music at all.
I love listening to remakes of old songs that turn it to Techno, like "Call on me" by Eric Prydz(It seems addicting).

Snow Patrol, Ryan Adams and RemyZero get me in the best mood for work ;)

I agree with Christian. Pandora is the way to go no matter what you like to design to. You can even build different "radio stations" for different activities.

Depends. Usualy stuff like ATB, Shiller & ambient..

I love to listen to music while working - I can't work w/o it. I made a list recently of my best albums of '07 and there is a lot of good chill music in there.

Ulrich Schnauss is great to listen to when you need to wind down and clear your head.

I like listening to electronic music while designing or programming. I prefer soft music for writing tasks :)

I also love to listen to last.fm, entering tags like jazz or soul.

Ryan Adams and Postal Service appeal to me the most at this time while working :)

Styrofoam and the Notwist sets my mood while working. Recently I've been listening to Copeland too. I also listen to Dishwalla, Augustana, and other alternative types.

since i just got sirius, i've been listening to faction, alt nation and first wave, mostly.

The Six Parts Seven
Band of Horses
Bryan Ferry
