Hey all,

Do you think it's possible to make a living solely as a blog designer as opposed to a web designer who also designs blogs?

-K

I think that depends on how good you are.

It's a lot easier to get paying work as a mediocre "general" webdesigner than it is getting paid work as a mediocre blog designer.

Keep in mind, I'm a "in my spare time" (aka all the time) freelance designer, but I haven't done a normal, non-blog site in ages. Except for one I did for a friend, but it was like a two day thing.

I'm working on another, non blog site now (same guy) but besides that everything is WordPress for me. I have a relatively low price point (you can get a full WP theme for under $500) but ever since I started freelancing with WordPress I've never been without work.

So in the end, I'd say you can do what you want as a blog designer, charge more for the specialty but you can still do other things on the side.

Oli said the magic phrase:

"I think that depends on how good you are."

This applies to everything in life. I know people who lay curbing for a living who pull down 250k a summer.

I figure that if you go looking for blog related work, then yes you can make a living as a blog designer.

You've got a very affordable price, so you can probably suck in quite a bit of work. I wouldn't be able to make a living if every site I built was for $500, personally. For the prices I charge, your average blogger isn't looking to pay that much, unless they're big time and looking to make a living off of their blog themselves, or it's a corporate blog of some type.

Another thing I contemplate is how long this blogging bubble will last? Already from two years ago I've noticed a lot less people in my "real life" who blog or talk about it, whereas 24 months ago every one had a blog or three.

But if you know how to build a blog, you can probably build a website, and I don't see web design going away any time soon. (At least until Walmart figures out a way to sell it.)
