ok... is it clever? eh.. i see the "2000" and the "12" and how the designer tried to create the shapes.
when i looked @ it i saw it as the designers 1st attempt to get an idea out. i pray this is not the final idea because yes, it's a train wreck if indeed it is intended to be a "final" version. if that's the case i don't even want to see what the previous iterations look like leading up to this.
i really hope this is a joke. i know too many designers in london who can do better falling out of their chair drunk and suffering from pink eye!

Here's my opinion on the matter, take it or leave it. A London 2012 spokesman said this:
"The emblem is flexible and will evolve over the next five years... Our emblem needs to be modern, bold, flexible and as relevant today as in five years' time... We want our Games to be different. We are hosting them in a different era, in 2012... The emblem needs to work across new platforms that reach young people."
So the whole point of the logo is that it's flexible. And considering that all it is, is 2012 in a mis-mash of colors and shapes, I guess that's pretty flexible.
I also think using the word "flexible" here is a load of BS. I think it's just a cover-up for a logo that doesn't communicate anything at all. It's flexible because it means nothing to no one. Unlike all the past logos, which say something about the design and cultural icons associated with the host city (and Chicago's current logo, which, you know, has something to do with Chicago being an important city for art), London's logo is just a blocky, barely recognizable stack of numbers. What does it say about London? Nothing. Could it have been used for another host city? Certainly! It's flexible in the sense that the designers could have used this for any event planned for the year 2012, because that's all it is... the number 2012.
And I think a lot of Londoners are feeling slighted because they thought they would get a logo that maybe represents their sense of pride in their city, or at least something they identify with, and all the got was a couple of colors and a number. It doesn't matter if this is going to be a trend in 5 years, or a work of art in 50 years. The people who have to live with it right now can't be proud of it, because there is nothing for them to relate to. It's just too "flexible."
And considering this was probably the most expensive logo yet, that's sad.
For the record, my favorite logo would have to be Seoul 1988:

The more people that hate the logo the more publicity it will get, the more publicity it gets the more people see it and the more people see it will eventually just recognise it and no longer hate it, and when people no longer hate it but recognise it, it will become more of a symol rather than a logo. Still reading lol?
Just maybe this was the idea behind the whole thing?

Whose nephew got tapped to use his elite Microsoft Paint skills to make this hideous logo? Cyan and Magenta, wow. Maybe they want to make sure it will display well on CGA monitors still in use.

what really saddens me is that the olympic committee has stated they want to be more relevant to today's youth. i can't help but look at this train wreck of a logo and think this was an attempt to appeal to youth culture.
in my opinion, it was a poor attempt and fails miserably. and that website? *shudder*

probably someone who had to work overtime and had to do this logo for the olympics, opened illustrator, took too long, opened photoshop, drew a few lines and spent thinking about the philosophy behind it all the way home 2 hours in traffic jam on a Friday...

glenndavid, you're probably right!
I just can't imagine the conceptual progress, all the great ideas (if any) ignored and this poor logo finalised.
Or if they did do several nice designs along with this and presented them, I can't see how everyone would opt to choose this one!

I think most of you, apart from a few (Daneeeboy etc), have completely missed the point of the logo. I think the logo is modern, cool and an authentic representation of the current time.
The other olympic logos just look like poorly designed stamps, designed by an outer suburbs sign-writer. Look at the Atlanta one posted by RightOn, what a horrible colour scheme. Was the 'designer' colour blind?
The 2012 logo is dynamic, bold, electric and exciting - and isn't that what sport is meant to be?
I think in a few decades, when most of you catch up with cultural and artistic trends, you'll look back and actually appreciate it. Picasso never enjoyed true acclaim until he was dead...

I personally don't see any problem with the logo.
It will work well in any kind of media and I think because the way it was designed gives you a lot of possibilities in how to use it.
You can do so much with massive shapes and still keep the clear silhuete "2012 London".

The new 2012 logo may be inspired, but styles and attitudes will need to change a lot for this to be seen as such. It's such a pity and it cost so much!
