sluggish response might be a reason of many factors, like how much crap do you have installed in ur system or even hardware failure of one of ur harddrives. Try to check ur HD for problems (disk check), and optimize it at least once a week.
btw: I noticed that the whole suite works much faster on windows vista x64.

Dual core 2.0ghz at 2.3ghz with 4GB of RAM, opens in under 10 seconds.

Feels really quick to me... No complaints at all.

@Ozone42: I'm loving Lightroom too. Using it to edit all of my photos before they go into my new book. Extremely impressed.

I LOVE the collapsing palettes, I need all the room I can get for retouching photos and I LOVE the selection refining options for masking and selections.

Depends on what you're using it for but to me it's definitely an upgrade.

I have CS3 on my laptop. I really don't like the interface changes, probably mainly because I haven't gotten used to them. The thing is, I don't feel like it was an upgrade. There's nothing I'm doing that's simpler, or faster.

Left CS2 on the desktop and it's staying that way. I'm actually hoping pixelmator will come out with some upgrades before long and I can dump Adobe entirely. Well, I take that back, I like lightroom pretty well.

My startup time is a little long but not too bad. (I'm on a Dual 2.0 G5) I've seen it startup really fast on the Intel Macs. (jealous)
No problems so far. :fingers crossed:

Have you tried rebuilding the Premissions on the computer? It seems to help others I've seen with similar problem.

NOt sure if this is still active, but after just installing CS3 on a dual 1.25 G4 with 2Gb RAM, I find all the apps a bit slow, with Illustrator the worst - using 35% + CPU at idle.

I have support case just in with Adobe technical, we'll see how that goes.

Curious if anyone here or the original poster found out any more info on the performance issues.

it does seem to have a love-hate relationship with Expose, the fancy fading obviously costs lots of RAM, and when applying effects it does tend to take long to render, but not really slower than the other versions (CS & CS2), i also believe that this is not what they are claiming, they are claiming that it start up 30% faster.
starts up. not runs.
maybe, you should run an OSX utility like OnyX or Cocktail, that always speeds it up a little.

I just installed CS3 on my Intel Mac (1GB ram) last night. I haven't used it that much, but I did edit some RAW photos, and that seemed much faster than in GIMP.

Ask me in about 6 months what I think of it.

I only have 768mb of ram in my G5 i think and every time I open CS3 I have to go into a different room in case my computer blows up. I usually find that it is safest to duck and cover under the dining room table

CS3, and I'm still running the Beta version, opens in about 20 seconds on my MBP (which I got in March, so it's pretty recent).

The program works really well, and other than a few quirks, which I assume are because I'm using the Beta, it's a better experience than the past version.

Though really, somewhere around Photoshop 7 or so, the experience was top notch, so at this point I'm not sure why they keep making me so much more happy to get the new version. :)

One thing that really upset me when using the PS3 beta is that the maximum zoom level is no longer 1600% but something larger, so that now the 1-pixel sized eraser and pencil tools are no longer the exact physical size as one pixel when you zoom in to the maximum. I'm used to taking the magnifying glass and selecting a tiny area on the image to force PS to zoom in to the max (which used to be 1600) but now it will zoom in to an arbitrary level between 1600 and the new maximum and the tools no longer match the physical size of the pixels which is super annoying since I work a lot at 1600% zoom.

I haven't noticed it being slow (it's quite a bit snappier on my MacBook, in fact).

However, I too noticed how it messes up expose. It's really annoying because you can't drag-and-drop layers with expose (if you're in one of the full screen modes).

Recently upgraded to the new suite (the extended version whatever that means!)

Now the new UI is all nice and sharp and not before time but it's all running a little bit slow. Lot's of spinning beach ball stuff going on (using Mac OSX.4.8) and generally it's a bit of a pig to run. It also doesn't like Expose at all.

Now I'm not running the latest hardware here (Dual 1.42Ghz with 2GB Ram) but even with small 300dpi images it's not snappy by any means.

Is anyone else experiencing sluggish behaviour from the new CS3 suite?
