I was just curious as to what job most of the bloggers here have. No company names, just a description of what you do at your job. I work part time in retail ensuring certain companies have their products placed in stores where they are supposed to be placed. I make my own schedule, but UGH...

I am what I like to call a Woman of Leisure. I sit around watching tv, eating and playing with my pug. And if I'm not doing that I'm out shopping.

But, so you don't think I'm completely lazy, I do go to school full time, M-Th. So, if I'm not on the computer at home, I'm on it at school.

I will be having to give up my cushy lifestyle soon though as I will be graduating in December.

I work for an international humanitarian non profit dealing mainly with refugees.

Manage a bunch of computer geeks. I am sorta like their King.

I tell pilots where to go. I try very hard to keep them from running into a) The Ground and b) Each Other

Tougher than it sounds.

Also, I build computer simulations that help to train the other guys who try to keep airplanes in the air. We also occasionally build scenario specific simulations (to test proposed runway configurations or high traffic scenarios).

I work in the food industry and in my spare time I either code, blog or play various computer games such as WoW, Battlefield 2, and Counter-Strike.

During the day, I work in personal finance from a retail brokerage firm and help manage a few hundred million dollars of client funds. When not at work, I'm trying new places to eat or go out in L.A. (can never run out). In the winter I am often snowboarding. Other months of the year I like to run long distances.

I'm a web designer and web developer, mainly doing websites but sometimes web applications, or combinations of the two. I write a lot of PHP and database code, but mostly it's for extraction and presentation of information, not the setting up of databases or the architecture as one of my talented business partners handles that stuff with far more aplomb.

That's about 80% of my work time, the remaining 20% is spent doing business development, community management, planning, writing, and generally scheming about the business.

Estarla that's awesome, I secretly want to be an investor or a hedge fund number cruncher, perhaps in my next career. I wish I took more economics in college, though I'm sure it's never too late.

I'm a web designer and developer - airing more on design these days. I work for myself and currently in a long term contact job with an exciting start up. When I'm not doing that I spend time keeping my company ticking over with business development and also training my husband as he's joining me on more projects and taking over a fair bit of work. Most of the development work is maintaining a custom made CMS and working on larger projects - the other bits are blog design or smaller sites without any real development work.

Uh, I'm a floor installer. Not very exciting, but thats what I do. When I am not doing that or blogging I am spending time with my wife and friends. Man I should take up snowboarding.

During the day I'm a front end web developer at an ad agency. We basically have very large contracts with a few big brands to maintain their websites. It's a pretty challenging gig, and keeps me learning.

When I'm not at the day job, I'm at home working on my side company, also doing web design and development so that one day I can work for myself. I'm growing tired of working for others.

When I'm not doing either of those, or blogging, I'm either spending time with my girlfriend, chillin with some friends up the street, or watching tv.

I am a lead circuit designer for a regional telecom company. When someone orders a T1 based product, or a dedicated product, it comes to my group. We then route the circuit from point A to point Z, then order any facilities and porting that will be required. It's all very technical and challenging. A large part of my job is managing a very talented team of designers and techs.

I'm a software support engineer (engineer in title not in salary) for a global information databasing monolith. I (and 4 others) support our internal employees' (about 3000 here not counting field offices) computers in distress with operating system and software failures. And since I'm the only one in our department with web development skills, I get to code & maintain various group sites.

When I'm not working, I'm at home enjoying time with my family and doing lots of home improvements (while cursing a certain town founder).

I'm a freelance writer. I blog for companies, do travel writing, copywrite, and I'm at the beginning of the very long process of writing a book.

I'm a desktop support tech on an industrial plant supporting about 300 users.

I spend most of my time out of my office in a hard hat, safety glasses, and steel-toed boots.

I'm in usability and information architecture. Last week I did a lot of work with my boss's new blog and this week I'll be reviewing the first GUI delivery from our developers and giving them a list of things I want changed/fixed.

I manage two websites for two bridal wholesale companies and do customer service for them as well.

It's interesting to see what the non-fulltime bloggers do with their lives :)

@Mike: Thanks. You're right--it's never too late. If you can just look to your local community (or for example after-hours "extension" classes provided by a local major University) I'm sure it would be easy to find curriculum in markets or something related. Economics is also not a bad place to start either. :D

I'm a publication designer at a business newspaper (read: I lay out the paper and create ads). And Monday nights I bartend.

well i'm the former lead designer for aol video now working on design for adobe. other then my financial obligations i'm an avid vinyl toy/street wear designer. hoping to parlay some extra cash to build a business of my own.

Eric were you over in Sterling, VA or in an AOL facility somewhere else?

Wow am I the only one here who doesn't have a job dealing with computers? I feel out of place.

Carmodyarc: My dad is an air traffic controller at P50. Where are you at?

@mike i was over in the dulles offices which i guess you could say is almost sterling

I am a web designer / developer. Away from the computer screen I spend a fair bit of time skateboarding, mountain biking, surfing, snowboarding (when there's actually snow here in Scotland!). I'm also married with a four year old daughter and another on the way so my life is all about my family.

I'm doing my best to help the company I recently start working for to take its first big steps in the wonderful world of the web (2.0). Which turned out to be harder then I thought :)
And besides that, I'm spend a lot of time listening to music.

At work I am a web and game developer. I do front end (and a small amount of back end) web designer, and flash game development. When I'm not at work, I continue with the web and game development only for my own enjoyment, and I spend as much time as I can with my girlfriend. I also like to play video games, and watch movies when I get a chance.

@shadeofgray - you are not alone! I use computers but only for email and Word.

I work with a team that helps the disadvantaged across the county access training and education to get into employment. My official job title is "Project Support Coordinator", which is a fancy way of saying I'm the person who runs around like a blue-arsed fly in the office 40 hours a day making sure that the team can get out and actually do their jobs and help people.

You name it, I do it: everything from creating databases; making the tea; photocopying; creating archiving protocols; doing the actual archiving; writing press releases; organizing our funding so the lights stay on; researching various training needs (I have in the past found a place for someone to study to be an undertaker, I kid you not); changing the toner in the printer; organzing visits from VIPs; designing courses; teaching people how to use Outlook (the guys weren't employed for their computer skills!); and managing our admin team. Plus being the person at the end of the phone dealing with the gazillion "Cas, I need to do this..." calls which happen every day.

Oh, and we mustn't forget the general agony-aunt duties that have somehow come my way as I've got a reputation for being the cool, calm and grown-up one of the team (despite being the youngest!)

Basically, my job is impossible to describe, frantically hectic, never boring, and great fun. Though at times I do dearly wish I could drop-kick the entirety of my team into the Atlantic ocean.

I do two things, one of which is very important that I don't get paid for.
The other thing I do that I get paid crap for is work. And that's not fun.

OK, I think nobody said s/he is a student, yet :)

I am a post-grad student, and I have recently completed my Master of Science research project, and am now writing up my thesis. I used to raise some 800 riverine turtles and run feeding trials on them and record their growth.

Sleepy hatchling

Meanwhile, I am also helping my Supervisor organize our 3rd Annual Terrapin Independence Day (an event during which we release some of the terrapins I raised), which will be held on 8th Sept 2007.

TID 2006

OK, I'd never thought that terrapins could be called cute, but that's one cute little animal you've got there Pelf. I'm curious though, why terrapins?

@cas:

(1) Because they're fast becoming extinct - viable wild populations can only be found in Malaysia.

(2) Because I'm not exactly an animal person, and the turtles seemed to be the only kind of animal I'm not scared of, LOL.

(3) Because I can :) A lot of people research and conserve other critically-endangered animals and plants too, because they can, and because they feel they should (since they are in a position to do something), and I fall into that category.

Everyday we read about how turtles were poached and killed and made into jelly and soup and souvenirs, and it gives me a special feeling that I am able to spread awareness on the plight of the turtles (just what I am doing now).

I'm the director of technology for an international business management firm. We do consulting, training, and events. Most of our output is actually ideas, but we're working on some interesting products for Q1 next year as well.

I'm also a pro photographer, have done some weddings, and several commercial events. Mainly it's just for fun, but I do end up finding paying work fairly often... and I've never once sought it out!

I like to cook and play guitar. I like video games a great deal, but haven't had much time to actually play them for a couple years.

I'm a security manager for a shipping facility. That makes me sound too important, though, as I only manage 5 other employees, and one of them is a shift supervisor for me.

I'm a lawyer. For a person who hates conflict, it's not the best job. Fortunately, I managed to find a place to work where I don't have to argue with people. I do enough of that at home, where I'm employed as the mother of three children, a job I do for love rather than money. And when I'm not practicing law or forcing people to practice the piano, I'm working on my second novel. The first is about to be sent out into the world in search of a buyer.

I make rap songs. Okay, no I don't. I'm just a web guy.

Oh! everybody there is doing many great things. But I'm attending my junior school!!!
