Hey guys, I have recently updated my main site with a Grid Focus template from 5ThirtyOne.com

I've integrated Vanilla forum into this new design, and I am planning on using this as a ground up for building a better looking site. Main reason for choosing this new theme was it's simple structure, it will be a great base to start.

Let me know what you think so far, I know there are a few glitches here and there.

Website

Don't forget to check out the forum.

not bad... one thing I don't like is that on your main navigation hover, it goes from really light to really dark- too much of a contrast for me!

I'd like to see Derek's credit line go back in the template.

<p><a href="http://5thirtyone.com/grid-focus" title="Grid Focus by: Derek Punsalan">Grid Focus</a> by Derek Punsalan <a href="http://5thirtyone.com">5thirtyone.com</a>.</p>

Goes in the footer.php file. Not cool man.

@jmathias: I went looking for Derek's credit and found it present in the style sheet.

Maybe talkaboutdesign thought that's what Derek was asking when he says to leave the credits intact?

Not trying to stir the pot but maybe talkaboutdesign should clarify with Derek on what is acceptable credit and not acceptable?

Sometimes things like this can be easily fixed with a quick email. Just a thought to keep the peace.

I copy and pasted that line directly from the download, Derek clearly asks it be left "intact" on the project page.

It's not cool to remove credit for anything, especially if it was a free download. It's disrespectful.

I'm sorry if it offends you Sean, but I'm not going to let things like this slide when I see them. Letting them slide is exactly why these things happen, I would hope that Derek or anyone else would look out for me in the same way.

As designers we need to stand together and stand firm. If Derek decides to swing permission to remove the line, that's his decision, and I'm certainly not standing in the way of that.

Derek did a kind thing by making this design free to use, the people that use it could extend him the common courtesy to at least leave his credit, a small text credit, in place, it's no where near too much to ask.

I'm with you James, That's crap. And not fixed yet.

Hey "Talkabout Design Staff", get busy!

@jmathias: Your thoughts don't offend me and I actually agree with you 100%.

I was just saying that maybe talkaboutdesign mis-understood exactly what they needed to do or not do.

We are here to help and educate people. Not everyone understands the whole free downloads, leave credits stuff.

Why I said what I did was because the credits were left in the style sheet and from my experience, if someone is going to remove credits to violate a license, they remove them from the css too.

This is also why I made the suggestion that talkaboutdesign check with Derek to keep the peace.

I agree with everyone saying about the credits should always be mentioned where possible.

But, where we can download this theme ? I am a big fan of Derek's website (5thirtyone) but as far as I know, that theme is not available or I haven't seen, the one he offers is Foilage something which is diff to the one on his site.

Looking at your site, it looks similar to 5thirtyone, have you copied the css and stuff off the browser and edited to your needs, can we do this ?

Cause, Derek says Not to copy his theme ...

Please update If I am wrong...and the link to the theme..

Regards and Peace
Mutahir

You can't have looked very hard.

Considering how popular Google is, it's surprising how many people forget to use it.

Thanks rich, just after replying and asking here, I typed the phrase wordpress grid focus which guided me to the link .....:)

Was just lazy to google it but eventually did it..

Thanks for the link

Forums seems interesting, overall I find the white overpowering, makes it hard to focus (for me at least). Its not that its a bad design, it just seems to flow together and becomes slightly confusing (for me).

cappuccino, I'm using this as only the grounds up for something completely new. I have the same reaction to everything being white.

As far as credit in the footer goes, since ive been modifying some things in the template to accommodate my forum and so on, plus other small changes here and there, I can not consider this a default Grid Focus template, and thus I choose to remove that from the footer. Although the credit will always stay in the CSS. (I believe thats fair enough.)

I wouldn't want someone coming to my site and seeing it the way it is to think that thats what the default template is. And trust me some people are dumb like that.

I see your point but it still doesn't give him credit to the work.

You can certainly say 'Design by X and Y' because it's implied that you've contributed to your own site but Derek? That's not fair. At least some sort of note, man...

Although I may not have explicitly stated that the credit should be retained either in the footer or the sidebar, it should be a given. Just because a website is built atop of another template with considerable modifications made, I don't think it would be too much to ask for something along the lines of "Grid Focus modified by [name]".

I've seen this type of credit made on hundreds of sites and I have no problem with it. When you think about how much time was saved by downloading a free theme to build off, it's only fair.

The credit is not in place to serve as a link back to my site, more of a link for others to find the core theme to use for their own. Considering the fact that the WordPress community is comprised of varying levels of experience, I can see someone stumbling to find the download link by viewing the source for the stylesheet.

Derek, I really don't have a problem with putting a link to your site back in the footer after reading your comment.

P.S.

Great theme ! I learned alot by just going through your templates. By the way are you aware of a javascript error, one of the people who visited my site mentioned this to me. Something to do with cform has no properties

I think it's important to give credit where credit is due, and if you used another template as the basis of a site then it needs to be linked.
However, if you extensively change the design, that should be noted too.
I am working on a design now (for a personal site, not a client) that is based on a design from oswd.org. However, when I am through with it, it will be dramatically different. I am still going to give footer credit to the original inspiration since I did literally download and use the code as a reference and basis.
Someting alone the lines of "blahblah is designed by me, inspired by "linked name to template" so if people want they can see the template (free to use) but not my design (not free to use).

I am probably very late to the party, but I agree that credit, especially in the design world is a very, very tricky beast indeed. And besides, if you've changed the template, anyone with half a brain can see the work you did versus the original template. And those who can't, well, we usually call them trolls and should not feed them. :)

@talkaboutdesign: That JS error would probably have to do with the plugin. I didn't notice any JS errors before the theme was released. I'm not familiar with that particular plugin though.
