$5000 Blogging Scholarship
Written by Tyme White on November 2, 2006
I’ve been swamped with 9rules Round 5 email lately, usually asking questions that I can’t answer, for example:
How will I know if you visited my site?
You were at my site and weren’t there but 30 seconds! How can you make a decision that quick? (Guess what? That wasn’t me!)
When will the list be announced?
So…it was great to receive an email from Paul Stamatiou that he’s up for a $5000 blogging scholarship. Congrats Paul!
this is where you go vote for paul
One thing I’m pleased about (besides Paul being up for the award): blogging is finally getting recognition. The requirements for the scholarship are fair (we know Paul’s doing good in school!) and I love this requirement:
Your blog must contain unique and interesting information about you and/or things you are passionate about. No spam bloggers please!!!
did you vote yet?
If you are in college, you missed this one but be on the look out next year for the scholarship or other opportunities. Congrats Paul and good luck!

I ran across this scholarship the other day - that’s some mad money! If only I were a student. Good Luck, Paul. I’m going to submit my vote now for YOU!

Wow, I’m surprised that there is a blogging scholarship. Good to see that academia is taking blogging seriously. I voted for Paul. Good Luck!

well, i think its somewhat a little bit your fault since you left everything ambiguous,
maybe if you were more specific on when you expected to make your annoucement even if its december of january.. you might not get as many emails.
just my 2 cents, dont take it personally.

Nolawi, not taking it personally but I did a series of articles and in those articles I answered those questions.
1. You won’t know when I visit your site.
2. I’m never at a site for 30 seconds.
3. No way to know when we will be done thoroughly going through 1190 sites.
If we name a date we’ll be held to it religiously but as Scrivs said it would be a couple of weeks. So it’s not like people are asking questions that haven’t already been answered.

yes but those answers are ambigous,
“no way to know when we will be done..”
a better way to put that would be to estimate and say
it will most likely takes a certain amount of weeks… to go throug so many sites…
also it would have been nice to receive an automatic email to all who applied saying that we have received you application….
after all 9rules is just not a portal… it is a business… and those who apply and participate in any part of the community are contributing to the success and should be treated as… its just a matter of courtesy
and the people who are anxiously waiting should be given atleast an estimation…
almost every application gives an estimation of hold long it will take…

Nolawi:
1) This is a blogging scholarship entry not improve 9rules. I don’t mind the comments but you’re taking this way off track.
2) We did say that but no one is listening.
Scrivs said it would be a couple of weeks on Halloween. A certain amount is still ambigious and if we state an amount, we’re held to it. If we miss it, then we end up apologizing and it puts pressure on us to get through them all by a set date, possibly making hasty decisions. We won’t do that.
3) On the automatic email - a LARGE amount of sites went down that day. Happens every round. So if we did that, they wouldn’t have received it, so then what? We’d have to turn around and resend emails taking away from going through sites.
4) Nolawi, these people are not members yet are they? Are you implying we do not treat our members with courtesy?
Basically what you’re saying is “hurry up, I want to know”. We had no idea 1190 sites were going to submit, we have the needs of our members, and new features we’re pushing out to benefit everyone. Our goal is to go through the sites thoroughly because each person that submitted deserves that, not to get through them quickly because people are anxiously waiting.
Don’t get me wrong, I know what it is like to submit, I’m the only one (management) that had to do it. I know what it’s like to wait, but I never was so anxious I pressed for a date. I found out when I found out. I interacted in the mean time. I gave them reasons to come to my site (haha remember that guys?).
That’s why in area of development it’s common not to give a date…doing a thorough job comes first.

I could’ve sworn in my Halloween video I said that it would be within 2-3 weeks Nolawli and there was no way to get to the Successful Submission page without the site making it through.

I’m sorry guys,
If he did say weeks then its my fault, i shouldnt have rushed to judgement before i read or listened to some of the posts…
