We Have Influence So Says I
Written by Scrivs on October 16, 2006
Michael Zhang has posted a three question interview of me on his site and in it I say:
We have a very large influence on a portion of the web and we could have easily used that influence to make a lot of money…
That sounds like CEO-speak to me and the first commentor agrees with me. Am I wrong though? Don’t we have a very large influence over a portion of the web? Well of course I am right as long as I don’t tell you what portion of the web that is and that it only involves five people. Can’t say I lied though.
Anyways, if you want to get a small insight into what makes 9rules run hardware and software wise check it out. And be sure to scope the pic.

I think it’s both a conscious and subconscious influence. Sub-conscious in the sense that millions and millions of people stumble upon web pages that have a 9rules logo somewhere on them and notice it in the back of their minds, but also consciously because many people include going to 9rules.com or specifically 9rules members sites because they trust us. I think our influence is more of a trusting association than “do what we say” — people trusting our good judgment in selecting great sites is a lot more humbling than anything else in my opinion.
The most precious commodity on the planet is time, and it’s the one thing that both rich and poor people get to spend evenly. How you spend your time is extremely valuable, and if people choose to spend their time at 9rules or member sites then that’s pretty exciting.

Thanks 9rules for not using your web tenticles to make yourselves rich. You’re like robin hoods of the web. sort-of. And hey Mike, great comment about how we spend time.

Scrivs, That’s not really CEO speak. You’re being too clear for it to be CEO speak. I think the CEO-ness (ugh, I can’t believe I just typed that) of it comes from the ill-defined and amorphous terms like “influence” and “portion.”
Mike, totally agree with you on conscious influence, but I don’t on the subconscious influence. You have distributed influence through the blogs in the network, but that doesn’t necessarily play back to 9rules.
You have more of a product-based brand, like an Adobe/Macromedia or even an Intuit. People respect 9rules for a particular product or series of products it offers. And that may or may not be associated with the 9rules brand. So, your influence actually extends BEYOND even the “subconcious” reach of the 9rules brand. An enviable position, to be sure.
