Traffic doesn’t mean opportunity
Written by Tyme White on October 17, 2006
Amy of Mom Advice shared some awesome news with 9rulers the other day. See, she’s had a string of great opportunities come her way lately. Here is a bit of what she said:
- I’m the latest spokesperson for Cascade. Yeah, like that stuff that cleans your dishes Cascade. They contacted me a while back about providing tips to use in their promotional material which just went out to a bunch of news outlets. It was a one time thing, but they said there’s a good chance they’ll use me again.
- I’m in the current issue of All You magazine that you should run out and buy right now at your local Walmart. I’m on pg. 84 in an article on mom’s that earn a living at home. I’m the hot one. smile
- I’ve been invited to two movie screenings in LA and NY so far. One involving Tom Hanks. (She didn’t go)
- I’ve had inquiries from two different TV shows on being a guest.
- I was approached by venture capitalists about a potential “acquisition”. I have no interest in selling, but it’s nice to feel desirable.
- Despite all of this incredible things, the best thing that’s happened was when I was approached in a parking like by a woman I didn’t know. She asked if I was the Amy who ran MomAdvice and said she wanted to personally thank me. She said she visits all the time, reads all the articles, and has improved her life greatly as a direct result. I cried.
I read her experiences, smiled a big smile because I’m so happy for her and kept on reading. Then I came to:
Has my traffic skyrocketed? No. Do I now keep warm at night wrapped in a blanket of money? No.
That’s when I smiled because Amy gets it:
But that’s ok because these experiences are ones that money can’t buy. When they get older, I’ll be able to tell my kids that mommy was in magazines, on TV, and was invited to meet movie stars.
I asked her if she’d mind if I shared her experiences (obviously she doesn’t mind), went surfing and the next site I came too (non-9rules member) had so much crap on the site it slowed it down to a crawl. So my tip:
In your greed need to know information about your readers don’t load your site down with unnecessary duplicating stuff. As you can see loads of traffic doesn’t necessarily bring the opportunities.

I am not after traffic (traffic-shmaffic!), I’m after the cool leafy logo from nine rules. I’ve been wanting to join for a while now, but busy with my own blog to check for “Round 4″… or whatever Round is coming up next…
I don’t think you have very many “Education” blogs.
I realize I am a lowly “Blogger” bloggist… but my site is designed by a Nine Rules member (not your average template-type set-up), and it is extremly cute (if I do say so myself).
So… I wish you would put an email subscription box on this site so I could get emails of your posts…. and wait for the next “wave” of submissions to start. I use Feedburner’s awesome email subscription code on my blogs so that people who are not so techie (non-RSS/Atom Readers) can still get regular updates. I prefer these for my favorite blogs as well (even though I use bloglines). I read so many blogs that I like to actually get emailed posts from my favorites.
Thanks for listening to me blather on.
Looking forward to the leaf!

Interesting..
I agree, bulk foot traffic isn’t the magic bullet that triggers interest in a blogger. More often than not it’s their actions, or who they’ve influenced.
I hope this is remembered during round 5, that what a blogger is saying, or doing, or stands for.. is often far more important than their popularity on technorati, google or alexia.

More traffic just gives me the pleasure of knowing a few more people are (hopefully) enjoying what I write.

I think the title should change too traffic doesnt necessarly mean opportunity…
For Example we sell tshirts on our site… sometimes the number of sales is depepndent of how much traffic we have on the site during a specific period…. and sometimes it doesnt correlate with the traffic..
so the question is.. is the traffic targeted or not… if your site is dugg to death and the service you provide is plumbing tips… it doesnt mean shit.. but if you provide advertising space on your site… you might get an opportunity or two… my 4 cents

Traffic Advice at 9rules…
I’ve been following the good advice offered at 9rules as they build to Round 5 of submissions. And I’ve heeded a lot of it. I’ve cleaned and designed and streamlined and written. Recently I added the WP “Tags in the Head” …

I agree with Nolawi here.
A huge incoming traffic does not mean you’re going to turn into a bill gates overnight. You may have some great amount of traffic but not the appropriate one, which makes the whole thing useless. I think the most important thing of having a site is simply reaching the people you want to and make them happy. There’s nothing better than that.

I had a very small blog - one of my side projects. Before I could begin the process of giving this new project more exposure a search engine picked up one of my articles for an editor of a newspaper and I was contacted about syndicating my articles. I had less than 100 readers a day. So no, traffic does not necessarily bring opportunity. But you guys missed the point!
In your
greedneed to know information about your readers don’t load your site down with unnecessary duplicating stuff. As you can see loads of traffic doesn’t necessarily bring the opportunities. If people have a hard time accessing your site (ex. it’s slow loading) people can’t read it, can they? Hence you’re killing your traffic. People forget when these outside services go down, your site is affected. When you have multiple services - it’s like a clogged drain sometimes.

[...] Over at 9rules, Tyme has put up a post about the fact that increasing traffic does not mean an increase in opportunities to do things thanks in part to your blogs, sourcing news from Amy of Mom Advice. I’m the latest spokesperson for Cascade. Yeah, like that stuff that cleans your dishes Cascade. They contacted me a while back about providing tips to use in their promotional material which just went out to a bunch of news outlets. It was a one time thing, but they said there’s a good chance they’ll use me again. [...]

This is entirely the truth, Tyme. My site is far from a traffic magnet, but my content has gotten me full-time positions, freelance jobs, writing opportunities, and access to tons of people I had ever dreamt of speaking to. It’s all about the content.

[...] Over at the 9rules blog there’s a great post on “Traffic doesn’t mean opportunity” written about Amy of Momadvice where she writes about the amazing things that have happened to her as a result of writing a blog. However, even though amazing things have happened…. she writes…. Has my traffic skyrocketed? No. Do I now keep warm at night wrapped in a blanket of money? No. [...]
