Be honest, how good are your entries?

Written by Tyme White on September 26, 2006

Yes, I realize it might be hard to be objective and each person has different tastes. Here is a better question: are you writing 5+ crappy quick entries or making 1 or 2 superb ones?

The trend is to make a lot of entries. What the blogger does not realize is their haste shows in their writing. “Look what came out. I like it, go check it out!” Why do you like it? What’s wrong with it? What could be improved? Do you see what I mean? Here is another trend for personal blogs:

Monday: My life sucks
Tuesday: I’m broke
Wednesday: My boss reprimanded me
Thursday: My girl/boyfriend dumped me
Friday: Payday! Going to blow it partying
Monday: I’m broke
Tuesday: My life sucks

Well does anything good happen in your life? I call these Whiny Blogs. A site is a great way to vent but think about the reader hearing bad stuff every single day. Unless you make it funny, it is depressing.

I know, you are one of the Top Most Interesting People but are you presenting yourself as interesting as you are? Step back and look at your entries as a stranger reading your words for the first time. What do you think he or she will gain from reading your site? If readers gain nothing, they will not stick around for long.

  1. Chris Says:

This is true. Less = more.

  2. Joe Anderson Says:

I find it hard to find fresh content, I currently my posts aren’t great.

I aim to do 6 posts a fortnight, which isn’t too ambitious.

  3. Jonathan Barket Says:

I definitely agree with quality over quantity. Most of the blogs I subscribe to update in the range of two to three times a month, and while it means I hit their site less, I spend more time at their site reading something relevant.

I think it’s a double edged sword, though. There’s a fine line between being well thought out and being obsessive. You eventually have to let go.

  4. Andy White Says:

Good question, and hard to answer. If I’m not ‘trying’, I think my posts are better - more fluid. You know teh kind of thing, when I am just letting my soul/brain flow out onto the page rather than trying to dig it out. I think it shows when I have ‘tried’ to write a post rather than just let it happen.

I would like to develop a better internal filter so I learn not to post the ‘tried to hard’ entries.

  5. Kyle Korleski Says:

Yeah, I try to post at least once a day but most recently, a lot of bad shit has been happening to me so I have kind of a sour tone to my writing. I will try to rise above that.

  6. Rick Turoczy Says:

Wait a second. Are you telling me that people don’t like listening to me whine? Um. Oopie.

  7. Kyle Korleski Says:

That’s bad news for me too Rick.

  8. Andrew Faulkner Says:

Don’t post unless it’s worth writing about. That’s my advice.

  9. Kyle Korleski Says:

Oh trust me, if I didn’t find what I write about worth writing about, I wouldn’t be writing, now would I?

  10. Andrew Faulkner Says:

You’d be surprised how many people write for the sake of getting a new post out there.

  11. Dave Koen Says:

But Kyle, just because it is worth writing about to you doesn’t mean anything. Are people going to want to read it? Don’t take that as a knock… I haven’t actually visited your site but I am just speaking in generalities.

I know that for the most part the only people who read my site on a consistant basis are friends and family. So I try to tailor my blog posts to things that would interest them.

    I’m broke.

  13. amelia Says:

Lol! So true!! I’ve found that humor makes the unfortunate events much more relatable for the reader causing more interaction too.

  14. Alanna Says:

WORSE: SUNDAY “Sorry it’s been so long since I’ve posted.” WEDNESDAY: “I’m a bad blogger. I’ll post more, promise.” SATURDAY: “Did you miss me?”

  15. Pierre Lourens Says:

I write when I have the time, patience, and good content. I think that’s enough, and it is surprising that those three things actually come together for me every 1-2 days. Unlike a lot of other bloggers, I am not one who wants to have a post every day, only to have a post every day. That is like having a photoblog–if you don’t have a good picture and post a bad one (just to have a post that day) it is detrimental to the quality of the blog.

  16. Vegard Says:

To answer the question; they suck, it’s a fact. That’s why I have the Statement of Audience.

  17. Derick Says:

I think it’s a double edged sword, though. There’s a fine line between being well thought out and being obsessive. You eventually have to let go.

My problem is/was the fact I am/was a little on the obsessive side. I wouldn’t post something unless I thought it had some grand message. Lately I’ve been trying to “let go” and have a little more fun. I think it’s worked out well so far and it’s upped the frequency of my posting a tad.

I actually had two blogs going at once: one for the “big posts” and one for the rest. I combined them into one and it really makes a difference (in my opinion). Longer, more thoughtful posts separated by a little of this and a little of that. I guess I’m shooting for the best of both worlds.

  18. Tyme White Says:

    LOL @ Alanna

Many bloggers feel they have to keep up with the competition but many times the competition has multiple bloggers. So they try to keep the same pace and it usually does not work as well as they think it is. My advice, instead of making average entries make one excellent one, spend the rest of the time networking so you get the news as fast or faster than the competition. If the blogger gets the information first they have the edge on when it is published. There are many strategies but pushing out entries usually doesn’t work as intended.

Not to say we don’t accept sites that do if they do it well. :)

  19. Abi Says:

It is a much different game when you have a blog about something other than yourself. In college I had a tumultuous personal life that lent itself well to blogging throughout the day. That advantage does not apply to food writing in the same way. While a bad meal almost always makes for interesting and/or funny material, if I tried to publish reviews daily or as they were written, the quality of writing on HeatEatReview.com would suffer considerably. The three-posts-a-week format (aside from last-minute promotions) allows me plenty of time to reflect on my own writing and edit the writing of contributors well in advance of publishing them. Sure, the occassional post simply describes a meal instead of conveying an experience, but with at least one gem-of-a-post a week, I’m pretty happy.

  20. Lelia Katherine Thomas Says:

That should be called “A Week in the Life of an Emo.” To which I can only say, “Get those hormones balanced and smile a little!”

  21. Colleen Says:

This is true. Lately I’m finding that I don’t post as often and when I do it’s supposed to be a little more meaty. Not just blogging to blog!

  22. cristinamarie Says:

OMG, QUALITY. I would hate to read 5+ posts of “my life sucks”. If your life sucks, well at least try to present it in a funny and interesting way. For example a boring sentence would be “my life sucks” but to make it more interesting may be “not only does my life suck at times, but I enjoy sucking at other things”. That, hey– could be sexual, could be not.. but at least attempt to put a spin on it. Who wants to read the same old same? At least for me I post when I feel comfortable sharing my thoughts or simply when something enters my mind that should be discussed, even for my own personal enjoyment.

  23. chris rhee Says:

If your life sucks, well at least try to present it in a funny and interesting way.

Life sucking can also be written in a very depressing and captivating way. I WANNA BE IN TEARS (not from boredom).

  26. How did you get into blogging? | The undersigned Says:

[...] Tyme White have published a post, “Be honest, how good are your entries?”, which basically explains how I ran my blogs. [...]

  27. Thilak Says:

Yeah.. That right. I have come across many such depressed bloggers. Sometimes they don’t get content, so they simple take a snap from their digi cam and post onto their blogs.

I hate to read such blog. And I’m sure many others feel the same. Don’t you ?

  28. Tyme White Says:

Azhar - always awesome room for improvement.

Thilak - I understand the need to rant. I used to do it on my personal blog but I tried to make it worth while. I’d add what I learned from it. Attempt to put some humor in it or if I was sad I let the sadness flow into my words and it touched people. If I went on a rant rampage, I tried to spark discussion because I could be wrong and can learn something.

Whine, whine, moan, cry, whine just isn’t a good formula.

Abi - reviews are different. If something sucks tell the truth but say why. What could make it better. Give an example of a good product/service. However, 5 entries saying X sucks without saying why is just as bad as saying “my life sucks”.

  29. CK Says:

Although i don’t read them personally, angsty blogs can be fine so long as that’s the very intention of the weblog. If, however, it promotes itself as ‘the latest in tech news!’ and yet is filled with emotionally nattering - this is a problem.

  31. Kyle Korleski Says:

If I write about my personal life on my blog, generally, something happened. Like, yesterday, I got lost on the transit system. It happens. Not every day, either. But given the fact that I am quite new to Calgary, it might be a funny read for some. Or how I might manage to get a king-sized bed on the public transit system (anyone got any ideas?).

Basically, I don’t like to bitch and moan about the basic every day things. I would like to introduce something new and unique every day about my life or something that I’ve never seen/experienced before. And if I feel like I can’t do that, I will try to post on my interests, like computing, anime and bittorrent.

  32. CK Says:

Umm *points* not the naughtiness of BT!

  33. Brotherhood of the Bean Says:

When you run a site that has a narrow topic focus, there are times when you realistically won’t have things to write about. Since I subscribe to the “quality over quantity” theory, I personally am more comfortable with not posting that posting something I consider inferior. But that is just me.

  34. Montoya Says:

I try to make all my entries quality… I write a few times a week while school is in session and each entry takes 1 to 3 hours to write. I think people would stop reading my blog if I stopped giving it the amount of effort I do.

  38. Alexander Says:

Striking a balance between frequent low-quality entries and posts with a great deal more work put into them is a tricky matter, especially for the traffic-conscious blogger… a healthy disregard for your stats page may improve the quality of your content.

  39. Caryn Says:

I’ve worked hard to develop a writing style I am happy with, so when I post something just to post then I end up feeling dirty and like I’m being disrespectful to both my readers and to myself. When, for the first time in over a year, I was too busy to think of good posts and put them up, I took a break. Most subscribers were supportive, but their responses were quite interesting. One, who is paid to post, said that she has such pressure to post that she will put anything up, just to keep her blog going. Made me happy for a moment that I wasn’t being paid, because it feels like a copout to put up something just to have something up there.
