Round 3 Synopsis
Written by Scrivs on November 15, 2005
Before every round, the 9rules team gets together and makes bets on how many submissions we will get. First time around I think I guessed around 27 and we ended up with over 100. Second time my guess was more around 87 (don’t ask me about the 7s trend) and we broke 150 if I recall. For the Spanish round it was a little more difficult because I never dealt with another community/culture before, but let’s just say I wasn’t even close to guessing that they would break 220 submissions.
Sunday night it was time to guess the results for Round 3. I am an optimist, but I am also a realist (is that possible) so I figured we would break 100, but it wouldn’t come close to the Spanish Round simply because maybe we have hit our saturation point or maybe our audience reach has gotten to as far as it can go. Also I hate to be disappointed so I came up with a reasonable number of 187. I was wrong.
Like not even close to being in the same ballpark. Round 3 submissions totalled 509 sites.
509 sites!
So if you shoot me an email this week and I don’t respond you will know what I am up to. Acceptance emails will start going out today or tomorrow as we would like to finish this within 2 weeks. I know a lot of you would like to receive an email acknowledging why you did not get into the network, but sending over 400 emails while still doing what we do daily with our resources is currently not possible so I must apologize for that.
A big thanks to everyone who submitted and helped spread the word. We are a Network not only based around content, but also around our community and without them we would still be like everyone else.

Wow! That’s a lot of submissions!
Good Luck and totally understandable about not being able to reply to those who did not make the list.
Good Luck to you for having to have to go through all those blogs.
Yikes!
November 15th, 2005 at 11:41 am
Darn, I was hoping everyone would forget and I’d be the lone submission. 509 is huge though. How y’all do it I don’t know, lots of blogs to look over. Keep it fun in any event. Gotta run and check my email.
November 15th, 2005 at 12:15 pm
Wow! Good luck sorting through them all. But also congrats on such a healthy response.
November 15th, 2005 at 12:32 pm
So, does that mean your adding up to 109 sites in Round 3? *curious*
November 15th, 2005 at 12:34 pm
No I was just using the number 400 based on the %s from last rounds that have made it through. There is no set number one way or another. Can’t put a number on quality.
November 15th, 2005 at 12:59 pm
Ho-ly! Well, good luck with that (I don’t envy you - not this week, anyway ;-)) and an early congrats to those that make it in.
509 - wow!
November 15th, 2005 at 1:21 pm
Wow that’s a large number, are there any particular topics which are being focused on in this round?
November 15th, 2005 at 1:25 pm
Well we were definitely looking for some sites based around clowns and ants, but unfortunately none submitted so I have to say no.
November 15th, 2005 at 1:39 pm
Dang! And to think I was so close to submitting my other sites, antfilter.biz and clownfilter.edu.
Still, I think I made the right choice.
November 15th, 2005 at 2:15 pm
That’s awesome, 509 sites! I wonder if it’s possible to get too big, or maybe you’d need to change the model to accomodate larger numbers of sites.

Amazing! You guys are gonna have your work cut out for ya, but I can only imagine the excitement that comes along with knowing something you started has become so popular! I can honestly say that there’s not a more definitive collection of finer sites anywhere on the net. Sifting through the member sites over the last few months has really opened my eyes to new possibilities, and I constantly draw inspiration from the work of 9rules members. Kudos!
November 15th, 2005 at 4:31 pm
187 huh?
Keepin it gangsta?
I’m not amazed, that seems about right. You guys have gotten around pretty quickly. I am impressed that you guys haven’t been around a half of a year and the popularity you are already getting.
I have a question though, why do you do it in rounds instead of just emailing bloggers? I do realize the factor of the unknowns that you don’t read and you may not know about but what if there is somebody who wants in that didn’t sign up during the round?
November 15th, 2005 at 5:01 pm
wow, that’s a lot. will the current system of categorizing blogs on 9rules be able to handle so many?

I feel like I’m in a raffle with pretty much no chance of winning.
November 15th, 2005 at 8:22 pm
I emailed you about submitting my site a few days before you started the third round. Now I come back to the site and the round is over! Will my site still be considered?

I’m curious to see (if there’ll be any) new additions to the photography category, perhaps one or two of the ones I actually keep track of.
November 16th, 2005 at 2:42 am
Ok, I’m not nervous any more - I’m quietly confident that the other 508 sites that were submitted are better than mine and that I should be grateful I had an opportunity to throw my hat into the ring.
On the plus side though, at least you get to check out the quality sites out there and you know they all want to be part of your network.
November 16th, 2005 at 6:24 am
That’s a heck of a lot of sites. I wish I had been on the ball and found out before so I could have submitted. Although 510 doesn’t have the same ring as 509.
November 16th, 2005 at 6:43 am
509 sites is really amazing. It shows you guys have something going on here for sure.
Now I’ll just hope and pray my submission will be deemed worthy enough….
November 16th, 2005 at 11:07 am
Marco, your site is awesome. I envy all the development knowledge that you’ve got. I’ve been wanting to get into the development side of things for a couple of months now, and it’s always encouraging to look at a site like yours…kind of gives you the impetus to go ahead and do it, ya know?
November 16th, 2005 at 11:47 am
Go for it Chris. There’s never been a better time to get involved.

Hey Everybody .. how’s it going, eh?
Is it too early to ask for some preliminary statistics? What’s the corporate review process like?; will selected sites be informed immediately as you go along or, wait until all have been reviewed?; how many do have you selected so far?; how many are definately out of the race so far?; what’s the 9rules “bet” for the final count of successful candidates from this lot?; who hasn’t slept since this started?; who’s only been on a strict pizza diet since this started?; and any other statistics you might want to squeek out here into wwwonderland.
I’ve been going around the network ‘promo’s from existing member sites that were promoting Round 3 and was looking at the sites and people that seem to show interest in submitting … if that’s the type of quality of sites you have been receiving .. Are you sure two weeks is enough? There’s a lot of damn good sites out there.

Exponential growth rather than linear growth. Surely a sign that you are in good health.

I can quickly translate HART’s comment:
We’re all on freaking pins and needles over this!
Ha, it’s good fun. 9rules is great
November 16th, 2005 at 2:51 pm
Genius … You all have turned 9Rules into an EXPERIENCE! Look at all of us … waiting, checking, wondering, hoping. This member process is genius. 9Rules is an experience, in every sense of the word.
Emotions are sure to go both ways too.
;(
November 16th, 2005 at 2:56 pm
Oh, did I mention I’m now becoming physically affected from the waiting (I submitted on November 14 at 12:01am)?
November 16th, 2005 at 3:14 pm
We will start the selection process tomorrow (sorry for the wait) and if you are selected you will know immediately. I am going to go out on a limb and say we will have this all done by next Friday so people don’t start lynching us for taking too long.
For now, it’s a good time to pump out that quality content on your sites because it’s possible we haven’t touched it yet.

Thanks for update .. hopefully Shawn Anthony’s blood pressure will return back to normal now
November 16th, 2005 at 4:02 pm
… returning to normal, albeit slowly. Thanks for the concern Hart.
Permission to hang that green leaf on my blog would work wonders for my physical well-being (eh hem … cough).
November 17th, 2005 at 2:11 am
Noticed a hit from 9rules.com/r2 while checking mint.
Guess that means you’ve seen it. Nifty way to know whether or not you’ve been reviewed yet. I’m not surprised you had 509 submissions. 9rules has spread like wildfire.
I hope you find some great new blogs. I’m squirming in anticipation of new reading material.
November 17th, 2005 at 5:32 am
I can’t make up my mind what’s ‘killing’ me more. Wondering whether I’ll manage to score a top 2 position with my submission for the Typo theme contest and earn a notebook or the question whether I’ll be accepted for the network or not…
Aaaargh the suspense!
November 17th, 2005 at 6:44 am
It would be great to see who’s already been accepted onto the network. Even a day by day release of sites that have been deemed worthy would be cool.
November 17th, 2005 at 10:02 am
@Koray: I noticed the same thing in my stats, but wondered if people had just clicked on my name in this forum.
November 17th, 2005 at 11:32 am
@Shane: no, because if you try to go there it blocks you out unless you have a password.
I found that in my stats within a couple hours of submitting, but they only looked at the homepage for a minute or so then left. I’m not sure if that’s bad, or if it means they just haven’t taken a good look yet…
I agree with Jennine that it would be great to see everyday a release of who got in.
November 17th, 2005 at 11:34 am
Emails start going out today so either Friday or Monday you will start to see who is in.
November 17th, 2005 at 2:28 pm
sweet, thanks for the update… I was a little worried cuz I thought all the emails had gone out already =P
Now I have a whole weekend worth of being worried =D
November 17th, 2005 at 3:05 pm
@Elliot: Evidently I’m an idiot. I did not read Koray’s post closely and did not notice the /r2 in the referral path. Thanks for bringing that to my attention.

Scrivs,
Hope you didn’t skip over my site, I got an email from my web host telling me that the server would be down for a little while while they install a new hard drive. If you could check back over my site later, he said it would be fixed.
Thanks, Nick
November 17th, 2005 at 10:39 pm
I don’t think that will be a problem.
November 17th, 2005 at 11:45 pm
Yeah me too. TextDrive had a kernel panic earlier … my site vanished for a bit. Did emails go out today?
November 18th, 2005 at 4:02 am
