Dignity Is Deadly

Written by Scrivs on September 30, 2005

Business guru Kathy Sierra has written an excellent piece on what happens to companies when they move beyond the start-up phase and I must admit that it is something I have been thinking a lot about lately. We are fortunate to be a small team that gets along and are very laid back with regards to how we get things done. What happens to us though once we move passed this small stage? Do we lose the passion and excitement?

I can’t answer that now, but I do know that once it stops being fun working for 9rules I am buying the first ticket out of here. If dignity is deadly then that’s a good thing because I am not sure we had any to start off with in the first place.

Interesting link. I often battled with my ex-boss when it came to being professional to get the corporate clients. Sadly he was largely right in the world of London where successful mavericks out of suit and tie were few and far between. The thing though was those mavericks coined it as they had little competition and the maverick market was big enough.

I wonder how the Flickr chaps are handling all of this, behind the happy press-releases I mean. They do seem to have toned down their craziness since Yahoo! bought them.

I remember a quote from the CEO of a long-gone dotcom (that’s another story though) who insisted on staying small resource-wise e.g. not having more than 20 employees at a time, because doing otherwise, he said, “that’s when the whole fun and great things about doing this go away”.

It’s easy to get away with daring and crazy things when there’s only 4 of you. But what happens when you hit 40? 400? 4.000?

I guess just about any big shot Fortune 500 company has the answer.
