9rules Spanish Status
Written by Scrivs on September 14, 2005

I was hoping that we could get the new 9rules homepage out, but it is going to take just a little bit longer. Why is the new homepage so important? Well we want to make sure our Spanish members are treated as equally as our English members so we are creating a page that will allow both Spanish and English sites on the frontpage.
For now we are beginning to go over the sites and will begin to send out emails next week letting you know if you have made it in or not. We are still unsure as to when we wish to announce the sites, but know that we are working hard to get the new homepage out the door quickly.
Thank you for your patience and submitting your sites.

“For now we are beginning to go over the sites and will begin to send out emails next week letting you know if you have made it in or not.”
What about the people from the second round of the English sites who still haven’t heard back yet?

Won’t english users feel alienated with all the spanish content that will show here in ther future? You know, like orkut when became mostly a portuguese site.
Most professionals around the world are meant to speak english or, at least, understand it. It is a very basic requirement in every important job, and you did not get hired if don’t speak it.
US guys on the other hand, doesn’t find themselves in the necessity of learning a foreign language. Some may want to learn spanish just for the sake of culture, not because they need to.
I’m glad that 9rules gives the same importance to spanish and english content, but they may be users who doesn’t speak a word of spanish and doesn’t give a damn about it.
Then somebody will complain about the “taco eaters” or “frijoleros” or something like that and then, the 9rules flamewars shall begin.

“Won’t english users feel alienated with all the spanish content that will show here in ther future?”
I think this argument has already been thrashed out in an earlier entry/comments. I don’t really care if people want to speak Spanish but it is really confusing when I’m half way through reading a thread and suddenly the comments turn into another language.

Agreed. Either keep it just one language, or provide translation into the faulty one. It IS annoying even for us who can speak / understand both.
And then we will have german blogs, french blogs, etc .. imagine if you can’t actually read any full entry anymore!!

The 9r homepage will have a preferences setting where you can set the language. As for the blog there will be a Spanish blog. Therefore English readers can get just English and Spanish reader can get just Spanish. Or if you want everything together you can get that as well.
