Invisible files on OSX desktop - where'd they go?

This is my first post to 9Rules and I hope I don't piss anyone off, but i've encountered an anomaly in Leopard and wondered if anyone shared the same issue.
Of late, when I've downloaded files to the desktop or taken screen grabs, the files do not appear visually on the desktop. The files are there, when i open up a finder window and browse to the desktop they're all there, but when i'm looking at the desktop on it's own I see nothing. As soon as i go into "show view options" and change the icon size they all pop into existence.
Has anyone else experienced this or should i post it on apple's site?

Very odd, only thing I can think of is that you previously had a second monitor connected and that their positions on the desktop are off your field of view. How about if you do View > Clean Up... do they show then?

Hey Mike. Tried clean up, tried a reboot and i've never had a second monitor as i'm on an iMac. The only thing that made them pop back into existence was to change the icon size. It could just be a leopard thang...
